HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1984-04-11, Page 5THE HURON EXPOSITOR, APRIL 11, 1984 — A5 Two-way race for Liberal nomination There is now a definite two-way race for the federal Liberal nomination in Perth. Brian Innes, 32, of R.R.2, St. Pauls announced on Apr. 6 that he will seek nomination as the federal Liberal candidate while the other declared candidate is Bob McTavish of R.R.2, Stratford, general - manager of Gaffney Construction. William Sommerville of Stratford, pres- ident of Victoria and Grey Trust, has indicated an interest but has not definitely said he is seeking the nomination. Mr. nnes, a native of Perth, has worked in awe for the past nine years. He has ken a temporary leave of absence from his position as special assistant -advisor to the Hon. Herb Gray, president of the Treasury Board. Mr. Innes also worked for Mr. Gray when he was minister of industry, trade and commerce. Before working for Mr. Gray, the Perth native acted as special assistant to both the Hon. John Roberts, then minister of the environment, and the Hon. Anthony Abbott, minister of small business. He was also assistant to the Hon. Judd Buchanan when he was minister of Indian and Northern Affairs. Mr. Innes' political connections run deep. His father is Downie Township Reeve Calvin Innes and he has also served as MPP Hugh Edighoffer's campaign manager in the last three provincial elections. Computer equipment. to be purchased The Perth County Board of Education at their Apr. 10 meeting approved spending $115,000 on computer equipment. The $115,000 includes money already approved to be spent on ICON or CemCorp computers. The allotment was part of the board's 1984 budget. The board's computer consultant, John Bruder, said the computer advisory commit- tee initially had a budget of $185,000, but Keith Thompson, superintendent of pro- gram, had advised paring down that figure. Half of the $115,000 will be spent for equipment at Central Secondary School in Stratford. Central is expected to receive four CemCorp computers at $24,000 with 24 additional workstations at $24,000. Seven printers and the upgrading of computer equipment makes up the rest of the Central Computer budget. Stratford's Northwestern Secondary School is expected to receive computer equipment totaling $20,500. This includes two CemCorp computers plus three printers. Listowel District Secondary School is budgeted to receive 516,000 in computer equipment. This money is for one CemCorp plus 12 workstations and one printer. Two Commodore 64 computer systems are to be transferred from LDSS to St. Marys DCVI. Both the St, Marys Secondary School and Mitchell District High School will receive 52,500 to upgrade existing hardware. The two schools have stable enrolment , in computer-related courses. Each elementary school in the county will receive 51,500 for computer equipment. Board hires one supervisor The Perth, County Board of Education approved hiring one summer supervisor for the plant department despite complaints from some trustees that the position isn't necessary. On Apr. 10, the board approved hiring a co-operative civil engineering student from the University of Waterloo as a maintenance supervisor from May to August at a salary of S250 per week. Stratford trustee Paul Parlee said the reasons given for hiring a temporary maintenance supervisor are a "trumped up excuse for hiring staff". He said if the board didn't have a professional engineer on staff he could understand the need for such a position. Milverton Trustee Barbara Herman sug gested that the position be subject to receiving financial government assistance. Director of Education Paul Sherratt said all such sources were checked out and there is no government funding. Superintendent of business and finance Bob Noble said the board is going to spend a total of 53,500 on the position to ensure that "good quality work" is done on construction projects valued at 5100,000 and up. In an interview, Mr. Innes said he stresses two points. First, "women are a burgeoning force in society" and second, the youth of today are an "untapped resource". His parents. Calvin and Bonnie Innes, have a cash crop farm in Downie Township. He has one brother, Robert of Edmonton; and three sisters, Mary Lawless of Owen Sound, Elaine Green of Tavistock, Christine Parks of Ottawa; and grandmother Beatrice Innes of Ritz Lutherna Villa, Mitchell.
