Organic or health foods ate ho mote
nutritious than most food' available in any
supermarket. But, because they're seen as
having special health -giving properties, Ws
hard to convince people that they can do more
harm than good, 'Karen Kennedy, education-
al consultant for Health and Welfare Canada
told about 40 people at Huronview hist week.
"Food is synonymous with motherhood so
when you're trying to debunk a food fad,
you're trying to debunk something good,"
said Ms, Kennedy.
Foods which promise an outcome too good
to be true, usually cost more than regular
food. They rely on a testimonial rather than
scientific proof which can be dangerous when
people use them to "cure" their own health,.
problems rather than seek professional help.
"No food can be labelled or advertised as a
treatment or cure to cancer, diabetes,
arthritis, tuberculosis or other diseases.
We're concerned that people are going to
dispel? thenisel;iies instead fof gong fo a
doctor, she said.
The belief that everyone has to take
vitamin supplements especially if they're
feeling rundown is one, of the rod. fallacies.
Anyone who eats abalanced diet according to
C ada's Food Guide does tiotriedd vitamin
Or mineral supplements, she said.
"tet's not go to.the trouble of eating well.
Let's just pop a pillthat seems to be the
answer we want. But, 1 would sggest
spending more time on your diet,"said
Huron County nutritionist Cathy Thomson.
Because people haven't taken large doses
of vitamins until recently, many of the effects
of mega -doses are not known. Scientific
evidence says that taking too many vitamins
can be as harmful as not taking enough, said
Ms. Kennedy.
Excesses of vitamin A can cause fatigue,
loss of hair and/or nails, vomiting or fever
while excesses of vitamin D can cause
nausea, diarrhea and kidney stones.
Seaforth Optimists'
canoe race set to go
Organizers of the 13th annual Seaford)
Optimist Canoe Race are hoping for ideal
weather conditions on Sunday. Apr. 8. "Last
year, we had one of the worst storms come
through the area on race day," says Arnold
Stinnissen, race organizer.
Though race hopefuls slept in vans and at
the Optimist hall last year, the Optimist Club
is optimistic the race won't have to be
postponed as in 1983. "Even though it was
postponed, we still had 40 canoes in .the
Hayfield River for the race. Every year, we
have at least 35 to 50 canoes entered -
depending on the water level and weather,"
says Mr. Stinnissen.
"On the whole, the race has been
successful. Last year, we had about 300
spectators at the Egmondville bridge. And
we expect at least as many as last year."
This year, there will be eight categories'
canoeists can enter. The race is also
sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe
Racing AtsociatiOn. A feature again thisyear.
is the kayak category. "We had five kayaks
last year, and we re gcautg more every
year," says Mr. Stinnis• sew
"Because we conduct a sanctioned race,
canoeists can obtain points in outrace. From
here, they go onto bigger rates, But amateur •
canoeists are still the biggest group who
participate. They're local people who want to
support the Optimist club.'
Registration begins at'9:30 Sunday morn-
ing at the Egthentiville bridge. Itaciligstarts
at 1:00 p.m. The level of the Bayfield river is .
high, and organizers Say thee conditions will
be ideal if the water level does not dedthe.
"We hold. our raceearly in the season
because at this time, there's enough water in
the river to accommodate everycine," says
Mr. Stinnissen. "And for this reason, our
canoe race is the first in south-western
Ontario."
"The Bayfield River is a topgh river to
canoe. People come because it's a chal-
lenge."
Trophies will be presented to the winners
at the end of the 10 mile course. Proceeds will
go to Optiinist Youth work.
