Marchl.$ Nutrition Aktniti
March 198-4 is again Nutrition Month in
Canada. As far as nutrition and health is
concerned Dr..= Germain Brisson of Laval
University recommends to eat a variety a
foods; eat to maintain proper body weight;
avoid excessive sedentarism; and in all your
activities stick to moderation.
Speaking at the recent annual copference
of the Canadian Meat Council Dr. Brisson
concluded that based on results of various
research studies that the intake of dietary
cholesterol has no effect on the concentration
of cholesterol in the blood of healthy persons
representative of the general population.
Dr. Brisson said that cholesterol is
essential to life. Cholesterol is the precursor
of many essential substances such as bile
acids, sex hormones, adrenal cortical steroid
hormones and vitamin D3. Furthermore,
cholesterol is essential for the formation of
cell membranes.
Consequently all hirly pelts ,puist

biosynthesis in the- liver. In fact. the
0 biosynthesis in the liver is much more
important than the intake as food as we
synthesize perhaps five to six times more
cholctersol than we get as food.
"The sustained fear of dietary cholesterol
in the population in general is not justified

Heart Study Group of 1968 a simultaneous
decrease in saturated fatty acids and an
increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids
induced a drop in serum cholesterol by a
factor of only about 9 per cent.
It has been reported that :-changing the •
nature of the fat consumed will change the
fatty acid composition of adipose tissue,
phospholipids, hpoproteens• and cell mem-
