WhY do people smoke? Is the question I
always as myself:' Why I ,can't stand the
smell of the tobacco or the smell of the
smoke it gives off.
Smoking. is bad for the person who
smokes as well as the people around them.
When you smoke"one pack of cigarettes
your lungs turn a brownish -black cola_:
Also think of the smellof your breath. I
hate it when somebody comes to me that
has been smoking cigarettes and says hi. i
feel like turning and walking the other way.
The "tar" from the cigarettes gets caught
in your throat and if you` smoke a lot of
cigarettes you will clog your throat and
have to get, a breathing hole made in your
neck so you con 'breath easy.
It can also ' be very costly to smoke
cigarettes, with the cost they are today. It
Hullett students learn

Hullett. On this day the children do not go to
school. Some of'the teachers will be taking

CONSTABLE MARSHALL
During the last few weeks Constable
Marshall had been going around to different
classes, showing slides and talking about
bus safety. He told them what to do in case
of an accident and in case the driver goes
unconscious
WHITE CANE WEEK
• On Monday Feb. 6, we had an assembly
on blindness and White Canes. We saw two
• films. One was called "You and Your Eyes"
and the other was "What do you do when
you see a blind person".
The guest speaker was Rev. A. Scott and
we asked him many questions. He was able
to tell us a great deal about blind people.
VOLLEYBALL
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Hullett's girls' and
boys' volleyball teams went to a tournament
at Clinton High School. The -girls' team got
second place overall and our boys tried their
best but they stilt placed last. They all had a
lot of fun.
SPEECHES

Sap running at Maple Keys
Spring is just around the corner when
signs of activity appear at Maple Keys Sugar
Bush, operated by the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority (MVCA). Authority
staff have taken advantage of the recent
warm temperatures and are busy producing
maple syrup.
This year, the sugar bush, located south of
SDHS has survived 1984 so far
Well, we have successfully survived
through a full month, and some odd weeks of
1984, the year to possibly end all years. And •
they said it would never happen. Yes, that
year that philosophers talked about is upon
us,. granted not as literally as Mr. Orwell
would have liked us to believe. (touch wood).
World-wide disaster and destruction has
not beset us yet, but a brand new second
semester has invaded S.D.H.S. Yes, the
'grubbiest' of grubs, and the graduating
class of '84, are now being subjected to
'academic abuse' by a new set of teachers.
We are being whipped with mathematics,
typing, and English, to name a few.
At this point in a student's life -time, it
seems like summer holidays are not five
months, but five years away. It is somewhat
hard to believe that somewhere along the
line we shall once again break out the
bathing suits. suntan oil. towels and head for
the beach. But right now it seems like only a
dream.
Life always seems pretty desperate at the
beginning of a new semester, buff guess it
won't be too long until I re -adjust to a

same old routine. If only my entire being
would believe me when I tell it it's healthy to
get up at 7 in the morning!
