Canada's team in the Winter Olympics at
Sarajevo will not come home without gold
;medals. Speed skater Gaeten Boucher of
Quebec, a 25 -year-old university student,
captured two gold medals and a bronze
establishing his right to be called the world's
best speed skater. Canada's Brian Oser of
Onthrio was a arded' the silver rsetial tri
men's flinty skating but."$iat't%es not tell
the full story of his impressive accomplish-
ments. His brilliant performance in both the
short and long freeskating programs,
outclassed those of three -time world champ-
ion Scot Hamilton of the U.S.. Hamilton had
never lost an international short program or
freeskate. Brian's marks were higher in both
but because he had placed seventh in
compulsory figures, Hatttilton won the gold
medal. It was quite apparent that did not
please most of the spectators in the stadium.
in Sarajevo. All Canadians can be justly
proud of these two young men. We hope
they receive the welcome home they both
deserve. A number of our athletes in various
events, while not winning medals, made a
credible showing. Others, expected to do
very well, had unfortunate mishaps which
put them out of medal reach. They are
capable of being medal winners but the best
can have costly mishaps when under intense
pressure. Watch for them in future
international competition.
