No special education staffing increases
There will be no increases in special
education staffing in Perth County public
schools for the school year 1984-85.
The Perth County Board of Education
approved this recommendation from its
committee's pre -budget report on Feb. 21.
The chairman of the committee, trustee
Ron Richards of Stratford, said special
education staffing in county schools has gone
far enough' now to cover what's necessary.
Except for five resource -withdrawal sec-
ondary school teachers, a consultant and a
supply teacher for gifted student programs,
the board has reached staffing goals outlined
in its original special education plan.

Because the effects of recent changes to
the secondary school system are not known,
the committee has recommended holding off
on any special education staff increases for
one year, said Mr. Richards.
The recent changes to the secondary school
system include an increase in the number of
compulsory credits from nine to 16 and an
increase in the number of credits needed for a
diploma, from 27 to 30.
The changes affect those students entering
grade nine in Sept. 1984.
Mr. Richards, said the change to the basic
level program, formerly occupations, which
will now be offered from grade nine to 12,
could have an effect on special education.
This, he said, is the main reason for holding
off on hiring additional staff for secondary
school special education.
Special education in 'Perth presently
consists of 28.5 ,elementary resource with-
drawal teaching positions, nine elementary
self-contained (Portia and Atwood schools)
teaching positions, five secondary resource
withdrawal positions. 23 occupations teach-
ing positions, time consultants, three
teacher'aides, one supply teacher for gifted
student programs; one supervisor of special
services., a part-time psychologist, three
psychometrists, four speech-language patho-
logists and one attendance counsellor.
