There have been a' lot of really good movies on the tube lately. Sunday night alone there were three excellent movies on TV all at the same time.•Mv favorlte of the three is On Golden Pond, starring Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. I've seen that movie three times and 1 still laugh and cry in the appropriate scenes even though l know perfectly well what is going to happen next. On Golden, Pond is a movie that all 'ages may enjoy and learn something from.. The movie , is based . on • an elderly couple vacationing at thea summer cottage and the friendship that they form with a 1$3 -year-old boy. Throughout the movie the old man and the young boy became closer and 'closer friends as they enjoyed fishing, reading and playing games together. There was a great deal to be learned•in that. Teenagers and senior citizens have many things in common that they may .orMay not realize. Many times you may see a group of kids dealing out hands of euchre, poker, rummy or even crazy eights. Amazingly enough senior citizens also like to play cards now and again. You would be surprised at how happy a senior citizen would be if you asked them to play ds with you or even a bdard game. .. Although there is a large age difference, there are many similarities between teens and senior citizens. Both age groups find employment hard to find. Teenagers are told that they are unexperienced and too young and senior citizens are told that they are, not qualified with new technology and they are tc o old. Both old people and young people may feel stuck because they are unemployed al d find life boring. Many teenagers who graduate out of high school but do not further their education at a post -secondary school institution may feel very miserable and lonely when they realize that many of their old high schooli buddies have left town to go on to bigger and better things, leaving them behind. Senior citizens feel very much the same when their friends pass on. They feel the same loneliness and emptiness. When you have two groups. of individuals who are lonely and need company, the best' thing is to -introduce them to each other so they may keep each other company. Unfor- tunately, this idea doesn't always work. Senior citizens are weary of teenagers' and sometimes afraid of them. They feel that kids have no interestin talking with an elderly person or spending time with them. Perhaps this is so, but it is at least worth a try. By forming a friendship with a senior citizen, a teenager may learn an awful lot about growing old, making the best of spare time and Ilfe day by dal do the other handd, an old man or lady stay learn equally as much from a young person such as taking dine when doting things, laughing at little things or mistakes and a little bit about i the present education system. By talking with. a senior citizen, a teenager is sure to gget an interested audience who is concerned ,with what you are saying. Day after day high school girls race home to catch the last of the soap operas. These girls are not the only people' concerned about whether Mack Cory is alive or not and whether Blackie on General Hospital will be a successful singing star. Many older ladies would love to talk to teenage girls about anything, even the soap operas. Getting back to the card games that I mentioned at the beginning of my column, how many teenagers have ever played a good game of cards with some senior citizens? Chances are that if you have, you were disgraced by the score. If you learn nothing else, you would be sure to learn a great deal about Playing a good game of cards if you spent time with a senior citizen. Seaforth has been called a retirement town and I tend to believe that this is true. There are a lot of senior citizens you meet at the grocery store, on the street, at church or at social functions. By being friendly and smiling at them, you are in a sense rolling out a welcome mat, saying I like you and it is good to see you. When senior citizens meet teenagers on the street, they often feel that the teens are not interested in being nice to an old person. Wouldn't it be nice if we could show seniors that teenagers are concerned? In the meantime, a good lasting friendship may be formed. Many good friends of mane are senior citizens and believe me, you can always count on them being friendly and pleasant. It takes no time at all for a teenager to adopt a grandparent and pay, special attention to a senior citizen. Chances are that the teen will enjoy the friendship as much as the senior will. Give it a try. - E f Qilhday f Happy birthday to Kev on Feb. 9. Happy birthday to Morgan and Michelle Murray, 9 years old on Feb. 9. Plant visits school Don Plant visited Mrs. Riley's grade five at the Seaforth Public School on Thursday, He told us a lot of interesting things and things 1 didn't know about Australia. He told us that when he was going to Australia it took him about 22 hours to get from Toronto to Australia. But there were two 'stops. He travelled by plane. Whenhe was there he worked and travelled up the east coast. He worked on a sheep farm and wheat farm. He was sheering 'sheep for four wdekcJ They plant their wheat in our spring, which is their fall. They had S00 pounds of wheat. Don stayed at a sheep farm. The,Thornbirds was filmed in Australia. They only get snow on the tip of Australia. They have these paper hats with pompoms and they pull the pompom and a big bang comes then a lot of candy or stuff comes out. There are 10 hours between them and us. They are into mini skirts and punk rock. Thanks, Don.
