And now,' religion andfitness have been combined in new, churelf-sponsored fitness.groupa with titles such as "Trim for HiM7, "Firm lialipvitS" and ."Believer- ' These groups *neve that Jesus wants people to stay in good physical as well as spiritual shape and quote passages from the Bible like, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John :.30). One imagines that these fitness groups, must exercise while • listening to such rousing hymns as Onward Christian Soldiers, Bringing,in the Sheaves or Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus. (Maybe it should be Push-ups for Jesus). By the enci of the calisthenics Nearer My God to Thee may be more appropriate. The idea that belief, guarantees success in exercise or any othertart of life stems from • the .right wing religious movement in the southern United States, says Bgmondville United Church minister, Cheryl Ann Stadel-' bauer-Sampa. "There is ,a lot in the Bible about proper care of the body, but using it that way (fitness groups) tends lo cheapen the gospel," she says. The Bible tells us to regard our bodies as "living temples" so that healthy people can better serve God. It also speaks out against indulging in excesses, she says. ; Doing exercises is not referred to in the BLADE BONE REMOVED BLADE 'ROASTS CUT FROM , GRADE 'A' BEEF won mAtitALED FAST FRY CHUNKS BACK BACON MAPLE LEAF PREPARED 750 g PEG.
