OFA praises government for helping farmers The provincial government deserves to be commended on its decision to help farmers in the Smithville grain elevator incident. Harry Pelissero. the Ontario Federation of Agriculture's (OFA) first vice•president said recently. "We're often quick to criticize the government, but this time, they deserve fun marks for stepping in to help the grain producers," said Pelissero, who represented . the OFA on the committee which negotiated for the farmers. The committee members included affect- ed farmers, representatives from the Ontario Corn Producers' Association, the Christian Farmers' Federation, and the OFA. "The committee's success proves that low-key discussions are highly effective in dealing with the government," Pelissero said, The Niagara Grain and Feed Company went into receivership Nov. 23. 1983. Local farmers who had grain in storage couldn't get it out until recently. Others, who sold their grain directly to the company. are stuck with NSF cheques. Dennis Timbrell, minister of agriculture. announced yesterday that both groups will be treated equally. Those who had stored grain are entitled to an interim distribution of 35 per cent of their claim. Those who sold grain directly will get payment of 35 per cent Old time music en Toyed at Huronview Rev• Norman Pick was in charge of Huronview Sunday morning worship held in the chapel. The choir sang an anthem and a solo was sung by Mabel Scott. . It was great to have Marie Flynn back again on Monday afternoon for old time music. Due to colds. some Of the orchestra were unable to be here. However, the residents were well entertained. It has been some time since we have heard the Bird Dance, so it was great to hear it played today. Special Care folk got together for a social hour on Tuesday afternoon. Refreshments were served. A talented threesome from Goderich provided entertainment at the January birthday party. Mrs. Richard Madge and Mr. Tony Hyde led in a rousing singsong, accompanied at the piano by Gordon Harrison, Piano selections played by Gordon were much enjoyed. The audience was delighted with a duel sung by Laurine Madge and Tony Hyde with Gordon at the piano. Following the program, fancy cupcakes and tea were served. We wish to extend a warm welcome to Lorne Finlayson of Kippen, Frank Dobsotl of Wingham, Mrs. Rose Phillips of Seaforth and Angelo Phillips of Seaforth. These friends have all taken up residence at ,Huronview. To the family of the late Miss Esther Jamieson, we extend our sincere sympathy. of thew claim from the government. • "That's over S111,000." Pelissero said, "And it's especially worth noting because the government isn't under any legal obligation to help farmers who sold their grain directly." Timbrell said he was doing this "on a matter of principle", because previous government information on the Grain Elevator Storage Act did not state clearly that protection applied only to grain sold out of storage. Final payment will be determined when the amount of grain left in the elevator is calculated. There is a shortage, and police are investigating to see if a crime has been committed. The committee will continue working on behalf of the farmers, and Pelissero said. "We're optimistic .the producers will be satisfied with the settlements," Meanwhile, Pelissero said, commodity groups and organizations "should make sure they have adequate producer protection plans in place." He added that farmers were anxious to see the new provincial Grain Elevator Storage Act passed and put into practice. "The new act was announced last June, and we still haven't seen the regulations which would make it effective." he said. LADIES' FASHIONS EgIe'sEL VIS} CIt BRIDAL .16 wC cni 172 Win St. W. (Hundertmark photo) Dublin flood study could. cost $4,000 Engineered flood lines for the village of Dublin were one of the topics at the meeting held between the Ausable Bay- field Conservation Authority and the members of Hibbert and Logan council, A public meeting was held in Staffs on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Hibbert township hall, In discussing the Dublin situation, conservation authority general manager Tom Prout told Hibbert Reeve Ivan Norris that at the moment the authority was using ,'. estimated fill lines, based on the to- `: pograpby in the Dublin area. In addition he said.,the fill lines„allow the conservation authority to'protect environmentally sensi- tive areas without having the conservation area acquire the property. Reeve Norris said lines had nothing to do with either actual or potential flooding in the area "We would like to see an engineered flood line study done in Dublin. The fill lines as they are right now don't give anyone any idea of where a flood would occur.,' The cost of an engineered flood'line study in Dublin would cost approximately 54,000 depending on the type of study done, said Mr. Front. The cost of the study would be eligible for a 55 per cent regular grant, and a 30 per cent supplementary grant. The conservation authority would pay i'/r per cent with the township picking up the remaining 13 Va' per cent of the cost.
