Winter driving. tips •
The Ontario Safety League instructs
motorists to see and be seen. Before each trip
always completely clear your car of snow and
ice. Snow left on the hood or roof can blow
back onto windows. Dirty slush and snow can
completely hide your signals and brake
lights, making them ineffectual.
•••••••
The answer to winter's driving problems is
quite simple, says the Ontario Safety League. .
Do everything -• accelerating, braking and
steering •• more slowly.
. It's not necessary to travel with the pack.
the Ontario Safety League reminds motorists.
When driving in winter weather give yourself
two to three times as much following
distance. In an emergency. you're going to
need much more room to stop.
•••••••
If you think adding weight on the drive
wheels of a vehicle is a good idea for winter
driving, the Ontario Safety League says you
should also know that it will take a greater
distance to stop. Adding weight to the rear
wheels of a rear wheel drive vehicle will
reduce cornering and steering capability.
•••••••
Winter driving is slower and often
frustrating. Be prepared to give more
attention to your car. your equipment and
your driving. Try to be patient if you are
delayed when a vehicle ahead stalls or is
stuck on a slight grade because of worn tires.
The Ontario Safety League also reminds you
that pedestrians face the same weather
conditions. The going is rough for them, ton.
Icy roads become much more Ireachemus
as the temperature rises. Stopping on ire at
freezing point takes twice as long as it docs at
minus ten Icelstus) or lower, says the Ontario
Safety League.
