Ringette teams victims of injustice
SWEAT SOCKS
by Heather Mcllwraith
It seems that there are morc problems
cropping up for Seaforth ringette teams.
Not only is the Seaforth Petite ringette
team being mistreated by members of the
Stratford Ringette Associat ton. but it appears
the trend is growing. This weekend, the
Seaforth Junior Belle team yeas the victim of
what appears to be Stratford's growing desire
to mistreat Seaforth's female Youth.
What's worse is the, "we will do anything
to win" attitude being exuded by Stratford is
doing little to enhance the popularity of
ringette with those who were up until now
avid supporters of the sport. There seems to
be a growing dissention with the entire
rganization outside Seaforth.
The Junior Belles. contran to the no loss
record being kept alive by the Seaforth
Petites. are having a dismal and frustrating
year. Having lost all their games to date, the
tournament on the weekend was looked at as
an opportunity to turn Things around. That
didn t happen. And part of the reason. or
blame. lies with the tournament's organizing
body. the Stratford Ringette Association.
in the initial game of the tournament, the
Seaforth team played against a Goderich
team who were. according to the Seaforth
coach, equal in ability to the Seaforth club
The game was close but the Belles eventually
ended up losing by two goals.
As in all tightly fought battles, the loss was
disappointing but easily accepted since the
game was close, and supposedly fairly
fought. The trouble is, it wasn't a fair game.
At the end of the game it was learned that one
of the players on the Goderich team was an
overage player (19 years). Since the average
age of the Seaforth club is 14 years that news
didn't sit well. And after it was learned that
the player had scored five of the goals for the
opposing team, the Seaforth team was even
more upset. But the game couldn't be
contested because the organizing committee
of the tournament had okayed her to play in
the tournament. Great!
With one bout of unfairness accepted.
though with protest. a Belles went on only
to find that anothe team in the "house•
league" tournamen was sporting all-star
players.
I can just imagine"ie disappointment the
team must have been i7relinvet this point.
And 1 can imagine the disillusionment about
the entire set up that must have been
engulfing the Seaforth Ringette Association.
On one hand, they had a Petite team that
was being touted as "too good" to play in
Stratford tournaments. Onthe other hand
their older counterpart, the Belles, were
feeling the brunt of unfairness from the
Stratford organization as a participant in one
of those tournaments.
What is perhaps most disappointing
though is that people like those running the
Stratford tournament don't realize they
aren't being fair. and 1 don't really
understand it. If it's obvious to everyone else
that they're using two Different standards to
judge who does and doesn't play in their
tournaments, it should be obvious to them.
can only conclude that they do know, and that
it doesn't really make any difference as long
as it's to their own benefit and they can get
away with it.
After all, this was the same organization
who just last week were telling me that they
had ousted the Seaforth Petites from a
Stratford tournament in order to be fair to the
other teams involved. That's what they told
me they were all about - fairness,
1 can only question the type of fairness that
allows an organization to change rules to its
own benefit. 1t makes one really wonder
where some people get their scruples. And it
makes one sad in knowing that justice and
fairness, though they have been missing in
the real world for some time. are fast
disappearing from the world of minor sports.
