HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1984-12-19, Page 301316 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 19, 1984 cop's Christmas FROM THE CHIEF'S D SK by Chief Hal Clus Christmas time is a time of caring and sharing. In police work it is also a time of increased work load. The stores are busier than they have been all year and shoppers are all in a hurry. There is much joy, people smile and greet each other with a "Merry Christmas". Sadness is also a part of Christmas. Many times we see the family tragedies, the broken homes, the domestic fights, the young person arrested for shoplifting or we bring the sad news of a serious accident involving injury or death. 1 find that the most tragic situation at Christmas is the lack of communication between family members. In many in- ctanccc it is easier for people to huv gifts than to give of themselves. Many people find it easier to talk to friends and acquaintances at the local hotel, restauraiati or Legion than to communicate with those they love. By failing to communicate. many overspend and then the family fights start and we as strangers are called in to help settle the differences. Yes! We have to go on patrol during the holidays, so that you may all enjoy your family get togethers. Our wish is that we do not have to arrest you or come to your door bringing bad news, Should you drink, then please don't drive. From all of us to all of you, we extend the warmest greetings for this holiday season. Christ as callers could cause circuits to overload Christmas Day is the busiest day of the year for long distance calling. This year, Bell Canada expects close to one million long . distance calls will be placed from telephones in Ontario going to other locations in the province, across Canada and around the world. Nation-wide, the total number of long distance caUs could reach six million including both operator -assisted and direct - dialed calls. Most calls will be dialed direct by customers since that's the cheapest and fastest way to call long distance. In Clinton-Seaforth on Christmas Eve, B'ell expects about 150 operator -assisted calls in addition to thousands more direct -dialed calls. Christmas Day should see about a 75 per cent increase in operator -assisted calls, than on a regular business day. On Christmas Eve, Bell expects long distance calling to increase after 5 p.m. and continue through the night. From early !Horning through to 7 a.m. on Christmas Day. there'll he a busy period because of a large number of overseas calls into different time zones. "We expect calling to pick up again around 10 a.m, and continue through Christmas Day and evening," says Peter Croome, local Bell manager. Mr. Croome advises callers they may have a better chance of getting their calls through by placing them in non -peak hours. Some circuits may be overloaded (a busy signal or no dial tone) at busy times because of the heavy demand on particular lines. Callers should try again later. A bit of planning before the holidays will help calls go through smoothly. Callers can save time by getting the telephone numbers they need in advance. Directory Assistance operators at "1 ", plus the area code if required, plus 555-1212, can provide out-of-town telephone numbers for all of North America, For overseas directory assistance, callers need only dial "0" and ask the operator to get the number.
