THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 19, 1984 —1315
ckle elected warden
After a tense four ballots, Paul Steckle,
42, Reeve of Stanley Township' was elected
Huron County. Warden for 1985.
Mr. Steckle defeated three other candi-
dates in the election; Grey Township Reeve
Leona Armstrong; Turnberry 'Township
Reeve Brian McBurney and Tuckersrnith
Township Reeve Robert Bell.
The audience watching -the proceedings
overflowed out of the council chambers, into
the hall and down the stairs of the County
Court House.
The tension mounted, when after. three
ballots, only Reeve Steckle and Bell had
their names remaining on the ballot. The
fourth ballot ended in a 15-15 tie. At that
point. county policy calls for the head of the
largest municipality in the county to
indicate his vote. Reeve Harry Worsell of
Gdderich, a candidate himself before
withdrawing earlier this fall, voted for Mr.
Steckle. If Goderich Deputy -Reeve Jin)
Britnell had been present. there would not
have been a tie.
Reeve McBurney was eliminated from
the running after a tie -breaking vote ended
with Mr. Bell in the lead. Therti'e-breaking
vote was in fact the second ballot. Reeve
Armstrong was ousted from the race after
the third ballot"
Nominated by Exeter Deputy Reeve
Lossy Fuller, Reeve Steckle said, "dia-
logue, not confrontation" would be his
method of governing the county. Restrain)
is important he said. He told his fellow
county councillors that they have to be
"good managers".
He singled out the road department, the
Huron County Atlas, additions to Huron -
view,. Rifle museum question and hydro
transmission lines as issues to be faced in
1985.
Mr. Steckle said the museum will be the
"single most difficult decision we face in
1985". He said there is no argument that
there is a need to preserve the heritage of
the county.
Warden Steckle said postponing the
upgrading of the county roads becalrse it is
too expensive would give the county a
"false economy" because it will be more
expensive down the road.
"We can't allow our roads to deterior-
ate," he said.
He said if care of the elderly in the county
is to continue, changes will have to be made
at Huronview, the home for the aged in
Clinton.
The new warden said he hopes he is able
to see projects through to their completion.
Previous wardens Tom Cunningham and
Grant Stirling made similar comments
about the Huron Cgunty Pioneer Museum
when they were elected.
The new warden's immediate reaction
after his electionas one of satisfaction.
"Someone once Aaid that there is no point
in reaching a peak unless you enjoyed the
climb. I enjoyed the climb."
The last warden from Stanley Township
was Anson McKinley. ,
Warden Steckle and his wife Kathy have
two sons, Cameron and Bruce who both live
at the R.R. 2, Zurich farm. The Steckles are
members of the Zurich Mennonite Church.
A past chairman of both the health and
Huronview committees of county council,
Warden Steckle has served on 'county
council for eight years, four years as deputy
reeve and four years as reeve. He has
served on Stanley Township council since
1970.
He praised all three of his competitors
saying it had been a fair fight and all had
worked equally hard.
