THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 12, 1984 — A7 Take the sting out of winter driving Cold weather does expensive things to you: car's fuel consumption, but there are ways to take the sting out of winter, A block heater can make it easier to start the engine in cold weather. Rather than wasting the electricity to have it on all night, or getting up very early in the morning to plug it in, buy a timer and set it to goon two hours , before you- need the car. Once the car is started, don't go back in the house for a second cup of coffee. Even on cold days you are unlikeI , to need more than 30 seconds to get the car warm enough for driving. '. Driving the ear slowly for the firslt 10 minutes will give the drive train 'a chance to warm up. Tires are also affected by winter tempera- ture fluctuations. With each 10°C drop in temperature tire pressure decreases. It pays to check the tire pressure regularly since underinflated tires make a car use more fuel and are more prone to blow out. Tire pressure can easily be measured with a pressure gauge and is best done when tires have not been used for several hours. As most summer radial tires "are not efficient in snow, snow tires should, be installed.
