Day services were held for those killed In the World Wars. (Mcllwraith photo) Employee status remains in limbo after protest The future employment of anti-nuclear demonstrator Joanne Young remains in limbo because a decision by the Huron County Board of Education has been tabled. At its regular Nov. meeting, board chairman Eugene Frayne issued a press release following a lengthy session behind closed doors. During the time the doors were closed, Mrs. Young and the federation officer of branch 45 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, Shirley Weary sat in a private office except for the approximate 20 minutes that they too went In behind the closed doors. "At the present time, a decision with • repsect to Mrs, Young s future employment has been tabled. Mrs. Young has been given an opportunity to make a presentation and further information is being sent to the Minister of Education," said Mr, Frayne, In July the board suspended without pay Mrs. Young who is a math teacher at South Huron District High School in Exeter. Mrs, Young, following the board's announcement, said that the withholding of the decision of her future employment isri't consistent with a Oct. 15 letter she received from the board. She read from the letter which said the board would be reviewing her employment at the Nov, 5 meeting and that administration was recommending the termination of her contract on Dec. 31. Mrs. Young said she received no ex lanation for the delay in the termination of her employment which she fully expect- ed. "I don't know why they wouldn't tell me," she said. Mrs. Young said she is In a financial position to disregard the "financial Intimi dation" of the board and several times called the board's action threatening with the Toss of her job. "We're at the mercy of these people," said Mrs. Young in reference to the trustees. ' Mrs. Weary said the local teachers' federation's official stand has been one of "assisting one of its members who is having difficulty with the board." When questioned about a possible breach of contract, Mrs. Young said "not In the circumstances". She recited a portion of the Education Act which talks about teaching the principles of Judaeo-Christian morality. "One of the most important things 1 want to teach the students is Thou shalt not kill and thou shalt not allow taxes to be used for killing," she said. Mrs. Young said she would not compro- mise her principles. Having been suspended since the sum- mer, Mrs. Young said she supported herself during the summer on the remainder of her teacher's pay and is now receiving Unem- ployment Insurance. Mr. Fraync said the board "has had considerable discussion concerning the status of Mrs. Young". "Once a number of items have been clarified by the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Young's status can be determined," said Mr. Frayne. The board has been waiting since the summer fotra ruling from Minister of Education Bette Stephenson on Mrs. Young's employment. "The Huron County Board of Education does not wish to comment further, since this matter is to be discussed in committee of the whole, it would be unfair to Mrs, Young's case," Said Mr. Frayne. "1 don't know where 1 stand. It's so difficult to understand," said Mrs. Young. HAPPY BIRT Happy birthday to Paul McLlwain who was 12 on Nov. 13. Happy belated 12th birthday to Michelle on Nov. 8. From Mom, Dad and Krystal. • friends + for life THE JUNCTION Halloween critters roam SDHS BY THE WALL The Wall (that's me) is terribly upset. I have been painted ORANGE! I hate being fluorescent! Luckily, my new color hasn't affected my vision and hearing. A lot has been happening around SDHS. Many unusbal and unidentifiable crea- tures inhabited SDHS on Hallowe'en Day. I'm glad that at least one teacher caught the Hallowe'en spirit. Way to go Mrs. B., you make a cute "Bert"! G:bl. was a couple of months early in her red suit, D.G. dressed as a "Farkle" jest so she could roll on the floor and show off her bloomers. Where did T,D. get that whistle? D, V.L. seemed to lose a lot of hair (from his mask). Did G.S. reveal some personal secrets by wearing leather and chains? Speaking of secret lives, why was C.N. dressed as ''Sister Christian"? D.B. likes saying "bite me" a let. She should be careful who she says that to. Someone might take her up on that offer. Is C.S. trying to start a "Monday Morning Turtleneck trend"? C.S. and D.G. scrapped briefly in Engli h because D.G. said C.S. was easy. D.G. later admitted that she too was easy...to please! I guess they are on the same level. On the topic of scraps, R.V. and S.V.V. had a little tight in the cafeteria. They had better watch out for Mr. M. He doesn t like that sort of thing. That's all for this week. Remember, if you can't be good, be careful. The Wall sees all! Short days fine BY ELIZABETH BOVEN Short Days, what about them? Well, 1 figured I'd let you get a little inside information from the man who knows it all. Here's...Mr. Scott! "Short Days are fine," he says, "as long as they serve a purpose. Events such as.a basketball playoff game would deserve a shdrt day. Many people take advantage of short days and disappear. Since they are normal school days, you are required to stay and participate. The Halloween Dance was- a success. Everyone needs a break once in awhile." We'll remember that Mr, Scott! I'll bet you're all asking anxiously, 'Are we gonna have anymore?' The answer is...probably. "We won't tell anyone when the next Short Day is because some people won't bother coming to school that day. So, in other words, they'll all be surprises - only for good causes," There ya have it folks. Take heed of his wise words. Some day we may be faced with the horror of..,yes...that's right! Another.. Short Day! SDHS students mark Remembrance Day A Remembrance Day Service was held for the SDHS staff and students in the high school auditorium on Monday. !Each member of the Student Council made individual oral presentations, and then joined together to perform " Where Have All The Flowers Gone". Members from the SDHS Girls' Band Color Party, were led by Greg McPherson who played the bagpipes. Four members of the Seaforth Legion, Frank Golding, Cleave Coombs, George Case, Gordon Scott, joined in honoring the many brave Canadians who fought, died, and were wounded in the World Wars. zehrs fine markets... of fine foods SPECIAL PRICES IN EFFECT 9 A.M.
