Hockey finally my spectator/sport
SWEAT SOCKS
by He s th • r Mdllwraith
It seems like a lifetime since 1 last did it,
but this weekend I finally went to a hockey
game -- as a spectator.
Now I must admit the game wasn't the
most spectacular I've ever seen but there is
a certain "je ne said quoi" about being able
to sit and observe a game at your own
convenience. Nothing makes it harder to
keep your attention focused on a hockey
game than when you know you have to keep
alert for the entire 60 minutes --stop time, of
course.
Then there's the added responsibility of
having to take photographs of all the
pertinent plays. And, as it usually happens,
lust when you're giving the old focusing eye
,a rest and the trigger finger a break the best

Murphy's law, right?
Well, this weekend was different to say
the least. It was a far cry from the days my
sister and I used to fight over who would
carry my brother's equipment into the
arena. I used to beg and plead to be able to
"saw" my brothers hockey stick and then
• tape it. But I was there as a spectator, and
there was no camera around my neck.
It was a great feeling to be able to drink •
hot chocolate at will and to view the game
from a safe distance. (It's unreal how close a
puck seems when you're viewing it through
the eye of a 135 mm camera lens. And it can.
get pretty embarrassing when you're
ducking out of the way when the puck is still
at the other end of the ice --oh, well).
In retrospect, I'd have to say I've watched
between 20-25 hockey games a week, in the
past three years, and not all of it was good
calibre. And after sitting through that much
hockey, to which I could not appear
Artisan, (it is the reporter's oath to be
objective at all. costs); it took a major effort
on my part to get enthused as a spectator. 1
guess I was just not conditioned to take
hockey as strictly enjoyment.
It was a little difficult to remember that I
could get hyped if 1 wanted to, and it took
more than a few recollections of my
"mert'y" youth and the constant excursions
to the ice rink "for ine to cast away all my
inhibitions and even to just smile. It might
even suffice to say I enjoyed myself despite
the fact that my team lost.
One might assume that 1 am not a hockey
fan. In fact, the opposite is true. My dad and
I are big Canadian fans I 1 grew up in a home
where hockey ruled the winter months and
baseball the summer -and I can't say I had a
miserable childhood.
