BIind.authoress talks books with St. James students
As a child she claims she was a liar. Now,
age 52, blind authoress Jean Little has
written 12 children books and has three
others in various stages of completion.
Accompanied by Zepher, her Golden
Labrador Retriever, Miss Little spoke to
students at St. James Separate School on
Thursday about being a writer, her books and
her life.
Born in Formosa, Taiwan, to two medical
missionaries Miss Little how lives in Guelph,
She has always been classified as legally
blind, although she admits in her childhood
she was able to read, with a great deal of
effort,
"When 1 got my eyes tested, all I could
read was the big E at the top of the chart, but I
still read a lot, In fact I always had black
marks on my nose from rubbing back and
forth on the page," she said.
Approximately seven' years ago, disease
cost Miss Little her left eye and is now
preying on her right eye. A new medical
discovery in the way of a contact lens of sorts
is all •that is saving what little eyesight
remains. And that isn't much,
"I can't see enough to stop from running
into things," she said.
"And I can't see your faces, hands or legs,
but 1 can see there are windows in this room
and 1 know you're here because I can see a
kind of bumpy shadow in front of me."
For that reason, Miss Little acquired
Zephyr, a guide dog, two years ago.
Miss Little admitted being a blind writer is
"not very easy" at times but said it isn't lack
of ideas that trouble her. Rather it is the
mechanics off putting a book together and
being blind that holds her up. Until she
undertook the writing of her recent publica-
tion, "Mommy's Going to Buy You a
Mockingbird", Miss Little still had some
sight to work with.
Now she had to rely on another means of
writing her book. She says making the
transition was difficult at first.
Miss Little writers her books with the help
of two taperecorders, Her first step is to put
the first chapter with all the punctuation and
paragraphing onto one tape. She then
improves it on the second tape, and again on
the first and so on, until every chapter has
been completed and up to her standards. She
says she will sometimes do a chapter six or
seven times until it's perfect. The completed
chapters then go to a typist.
"It is very time consuming but it works,"
she said.
As for ideas, Miss Little said they come
either from experiences in her past or from

observations of people around her. These,
she said are aided by, an over -active

"By grade four or five 1 was a great liar.
So now whenever 1 run across a child who
can spin a tale, 1 think what a future they'll
have as a writer - or as a con man," she added
after recounting a tale she spun to avoid a
detention in public school.
"I began to learn the power of a story and I
wanted to be, a writer --but 1 also learned the
problems lying could cause."
Miss Little's books are geared towards
public school age children and most often are
about a handicapped or troubled child. One
called "Mine Only" is about a girl and her
dog and their attachment to one another.
As a child 1 remember always wanting a
dog of my own --not a family dog but one that
was only mine. And that's one thing 1 always
thought neat about being blind. I thought it'd
be neat to have a dog of my own, that only
paid attention to me. I thought it'd be neat to
take a dog to church. But Zephyr doesn't like
going to church, he hates church, but he's
very good about it, He just goes to sleep
under the pews.
"He's no Mighty Mouse or anything, but
he's a fantastic dog," she said.
Miss Little invited the students to write her

She said that one of the funniest letters she
has ever received came from a boy who posed
