Paper treasures in London gallery
Do you have an old painting lying around in
your attic? Do you have family records on
which you don't have any information. Or are
you a member of a Women's Institute
compiling a Tweedsmuir history?
Ifyou can answer yes to any of these
questions, than Paper Treasures is for you.
Perth County archivist Jim Anderson said
in recognition of the province's bi-centennial,
the Ontario Heritage Foundation (OHF) is
sponsoring various events. This weekend,
from Nov. 2 to Nov. 4, OHF is holding its first
archival festival at the London Gallery.
"It's aimed squarely at the man on the
street," said Mr. Anderson.
The main purpose of the festival is to raise
public awareness of archival material and
preservation, he said.
He said that to the ordinary man who
purchases artwork at an auction, the actual
picture is tossed aside while the frame is
kept. If these buyers did a little detective
work and discovered some of the history of
the painting it could be valuable, he said.
Also old papers, whether they be family
documents, business papers or factory
records, are valuable. This is where Paper
Treasures steps in.
Besides exhibits from the Ottawa and
Toronto archives as well as area archives, the
three day show will feature demonstrations
on how micro filming is done, how paper is
made, how books are bound and the dos and
don'ts of storing records.
Mr. Andersori said staff from the Stratford -
Perth Archives will be giving a demonstration
on how to properly prepare a scrap book.
Other features of the archival festival will
be an assessment booth where personal
treasures can be evaluated.
There will be workshops on how to protect
photographs, church archives and how to
start a family tree. Mr. Anderson said
registration forms for these workshops can be
picked up at any public library or achives
office.
There is a children's section organized by
the Children's Museum of London. 'Neat
things' of interest to children will be on
display.
Info easier to read in new phone book
Lighted candles, the universal symbol of a
birthday, dominate the front and back cover
of the new London -St. Thomas and surround-
ing area directory, in recognition of Ontario's
Bicentennial, being celebrated in 1984.
The upper left logo says "Celebrating
Together, ' 1781 Ontario 1984. Some 245,000
copies will be delivered, beginning Nov. 11.
Peter Croome, local Bell Canada manager,
said the introductory pages of the phone book
have been redesigned, giving the public a
fast and easy reference for all kinds of
telephone information.
Drawings, bold -face headings, white space
and symbols are usedto make each section of
information stand out.
"We expect people will find it easier to
locate and read information in the introduct-
ory section because of the new format," said
Mr. Croome.
"One part deals with customer service,
another with finding numbers, local and long
distance calling and a final one with the
federal rules which govern Bell."
The introductory pages also point out that
there are no longer three free calls a month
for residence customers who call directory
assistance for telephone numbers that 'are
listed in the directory. There is also a 59
charge for processing NSF cheques.
Bell is continuing its policy of delivering
one directory per household.
