The Huron Expositor, 1984-10-10, Page 10(ALS 10 - THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 10, 1984 oys and girls can take Home Ec. and Indo Arts Grade seven and eight students at Seaforth and Goderich schools now have access to both family studies and industrial arts. While technically not new, superintendent Arnold Mathers said female students now take industrial arts and male students take family studies. And that is new. Previously students had no choice because they took the subjects as a class - either of boys or girls, he said. Now thv .tn.jent..n n qp-AA Pnvironment Chili ma take one subject for half a year and the other for the rest of the year. The integration comes about as a result of the revamping of the grades seven to 12 education system in the document known as OSIS - Ontario Schools, Intermediate and Senior. Elementary schools in Wingham, Exeter and Clinton don't have industrial arts and family study facilities. e by Eg; , LondviDDe 4-H Do you eat for consolation when you are bored, anxious, angry, lonely or tired? These situations that affect our eating habits were discussed at the third meeting of the Egmondville 4-H Fitness Fare Club held on Sept. 24 at the home of leader Marg Unganan. Barb Caldwell, who is also a leader was present along with members Colleen Un arian, Allyson Scott and Dianne Oldfield. At this meeting each member was asked to WIG s scholarship Dave Murray, of RRN1 Dublin, was this year's recipient of the Seaforth Collegiate Institute's Alumni Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is a memorial to the former students of the Seaforth High School who lost their lives in the great war of 1914-18. It is given annually to a graduating student who has done well academically and has also been active in school activities. To be or not to be a teacher The Huron County Board of Education has to find a slot to place teachers of developmen- tally handicapped students. Paul Carroll, superintendent of special education, said that this type of teacher is new. Currently, the teachers of developmentally handicapped students are recognized as teachers by the provincial ministry of community and social services. These teach- ers are graduates of a community college and are classified at non -certified, said Mr. Carroll, As part of its special education package, the board will be hiring three of these teachers for Sept. 1985, one each for Huron Hope in Huron Park, Queen Elizabeth in Goderich and Golden Circle in Wingham. The board's personnel committee has to decide whether to put these non -certified teachers as union or non-union personnel. This step takes the board closer to fuller implementation of special education. The ministry of education has set September 1985 as the target date for full implementation of what started out as Bill 82. No future for college There may be no future for Conestoga College in Huron County said college president Kenneth Hunter. Mr. Hunter told Huron County council that it is likely that Conestoga will not continue in its location at Vanastra. The president was presenting an annual report to council. In 1979-80 the Clinton campus had a full time student enrolment of 50, a number that has dwindled to 16 for the current school year. However, there is an increase in the continuing education enrolment. From 595 in 1979-80, this figure is expected to reach 745 this year. Besides enrolment figures, Mr. Hunter said the college has entered into discussions with the Huron County Board of Education regarding its possible purchase of the school facility.
