Singers tell their story in Country Hearts
BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK
On a snowy winter night in a small town
hotel, a country band and some snowbound
patrons sing about their hopes, dreams and
lives to a Nashville beat in Country Hearts
now playing in Blyth.
Whether it's a rambling song, a love
song, a cheatin' song or a "I've been away
and I've had a gutful" song, country and
western music keeps toes tapping as the
singers tell their stories.
The play takes place in the Commodore
Hotel, a typical small town establishment
authentic down to the cardboard Age of
Majority sign written in black magic
marker. The owner, George, played by
Robert Nasmith, has dreams of making the
hotel into a classy night spot with big name
bands instead of the local watering hole it
is now. To do so, he books an old flame,
Sam Slick (Daisy DeBolt) and her. band, the

old politician (David Fox.). -and his youfig
girlfriend (Patricia Vanstone) seek refuge
in the hotel from a winter storm, George
thinks he's on his way to success.
Displaced by George's attempts for a
new reputation for the hotel are members
of the old band including Marg (Robin
Craig) and Zip (Ross Skene) whose fiddle
hangs on the wall as decoration instead of
being played.N 'hen the storm worsens,
the big crowd George anticipated stays
home. Only the storm -stayed politician and
his girlfriend, the band and the locals make
it to the hotel and an impromptu jam
session follows.
Like all good musicals, the cha:'acters
seem to best express themselves in the
songs. Songs were written by Ted Johns
and John Roby. In Rick's Hot Licks, one of
the band members sings about how he'll be

a country star someday and in Wait For
The Morning Man Now, three of the
characters . sing about their indecision
about their futures.
Almost all of the characters exhibit their
musical talent with a song. In fact, the
town fool, Boomer, laments his inability to
sing saying he's •"inarticulate". While the
rest of the company sings Boomer's
favorite on the juke box, B13, he talks out
the lyrics.
One of the best sgenes in the play
happens when' Boomer, dressed in a
tuxedo and snowmobile boots, finds his
singing voice in the, lively ballad Love's
Triangle. He acts out the scorned husband
in his hilarious song of wee while Marg and
Snag (Robert King) act out the unfaithful
wife and her lover in mime.
The play comes to a close with each
character coming to his or her own happy
ending. Though it's pretty corny, the
ending is a satisfying finish to an evening
of good comedy and music. It's easy to see
why the play sold out every seat when it
was first produced in Blyth in 1982.
Country Hearts plays at the Blyth
Festival until Sept. 15, It goes on tour to
Durham on Sept. 17 and Waterloo Sept. 18
to 22.
