New holes open at golf Course
ON THE
GREENS
BY CAROLANNE DOIG
At this time of year in the golf business it's
tough to get what you order. Whether it's golf
apparel, equipment, or course maintenance
needs, everything seems to be sold out,
temporarily out of stock, or on back order.
Even the rain that we ordered weeks ago was
being delivered to every other course in the
area except this one. It seemed that Mother
Nature had the rain back ordered and I was
beginning to think that like other backorder-
ed items we'd get it when we don't want it.
Like maybe January in the form of snow!
As the dry period extended itself daily, the
course became harder and browner until our
drives were going a mile. 1 did everything 1
couldthinkoftobringon rain. Usually when 1
wash the windows, the car, or hang out the
laundry, down comes the rain. Not this time.'I
left windows up at home and down in the
truck. Still no rain! We even left Pad's
convertible out with the roof down. That
worked the last time but not when we really
needed it.
Finally on Saturday down came the rain
and 1 suppose you wonder how 1 did it? Well
first 1 mentioned two little word,,.,"Fall
Fair". With that short phrase the sky
darkened and the clouds loomed overhead.
Then I capped it off with two' more words
guaranteed to conjure up visions of endless
rains in Seaforth. These infamous words
brought on the rain I'm sure. All said
was..,. Ploughing Match."
We sure needed that shower on Saturday
and now the course is greening up again. We
may not get the roll we want but at least we'll
have an idea of which way the ball is going to
bounce. •
Three of the new holes are open and if you
think we were confused before you ought to
see us now, There's a new number 1,2 and 3.
The old numbers 1,2 and 3, are now numbers
4, 5, and 6. The old numbers 7 and 8 are still 7
and 8 but the old number 4 is now number 9.
You're scared to death to ask anyone what
they shot these days because it takes
everyone an age jtist to tell you what they shot
on which hole.
Proshop conversations go like this..."I
birdied number 1 today". "Which number
1?" "The old one." 'That's Number 4."
"O.K., I birdied number 4 today." Just then
someone will come in and say, "The old
number 4, that's number 9." "No the new
number 4." "Oh...the old number I".
The fun has just begun because now that
we have 1-3 holes playable, the combinations
of nine hole layouts are astounding. We have
different colored scorecards for each layout.
You may just master the numbers of the
orange course and then you'll have to get
used to the blue course, or the yellow, pink, or
green course not to mention the old course.
What funs
The only way to get around the numbers
game is to name each hole so regardless of
the order played everyone will know which
hole you're talking about. Naming all the
holes would be quite a feat. The new number
2 has been called quite a few names in the last
week none of which could ever be printed on a
scorecard!
On Monday evening last week ladies from
the Maitland and Sunset Clubs ,in Goderich
and Bayfield's Bluewater joined us for a
round of golf and light lunch. Over 60 ladies
made their way around the course. Winners
were: closest to pin, Kay Sharpe; longest
drive, Maxine Martin; hidden hole draws,
Janet Parent and Gail Price, least putts, Mary
Box; low gross from Seaforth, Allyson Scott;
low gross from out of town, Gerry Mountford;
second, Mert Elliott; third, Rosemary Arm-
strong and Jean Bartliff,
On Tuesday morning our Juniors played a
tam net best ball and the winners were the
team ofSean Cook, Jason Turner, and Patrick
Cook. Second were Jeff Dolmage, Brian
Cook, ..and ,Danny Dalton.
Also on Tuesday our local junior girls Deb
Core, Jennifer Watt, and Allyson Scott,
travelled to Listowel for the Owen Sound
District Championship. Deb Core success-
fully defended her title with an 18 hole score
of 99. Allyson Scott was second and Jennifer
Watt was fourth.
On evenin
a numbr of our ladies
visited the Mit hell Golf Club for nine holes of
golf and a delicious dinner.
Ken Doig is leading the Club Champion-
ship after the first round, The second round is
set for Aug, 26. Ken is off to the Canadian
Amateur at Sunningdale this week And we
wish him luck.
