Fatalities happen when people. are unfamiliar .with 'manure tanks
B proper "g
Farms are hazardous work places. Careless
use of machinery, tools and chemicals can
cause injuries and death. The unseen
dangers, such as manure gases, can also kill
the. unwary and the careless.
"Manure gases can be killers," says John
Turnbull, of Agriculture Canada's Engineer-
ing and Statistical Research Institute in
Ottawa.
"In 1982, three young men died from
inhaling liquid manure fumes.
"While repairing a pump, the first man
became dizzy from the fumes and fell into the
holding pit. His co-workers tried to rescue
him, were overcome by the fumes and all
three drowned in the manure.
"Unplanned rescue attempts like this often
result m multiple deaths, ' Mr. Turnbull
says.

Liquid manure systems produce large
concentrations of dangerous gases such as
hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide and
sometimes methane and ammonia.
"Hydrogen sulphide is the most dangerous
of the manure gases."
"Exposure to hydrogen sulphide in high
concentrations will lead to almost instantan-
eous death."
Since it is heavier than air, hydrogen
sulphide will collect at the lowest points in the
air spaces of the barn or tank. As the liquid
level rises id the tank or gutter, the gas' also
rises and may eventually be forced above the
floor endangering livestock.
Barns should be designed so that fresh
manure is removed as quickly as possible and
transferred to long-term storage outside the
barn.

To prevent manure gases from being
drawn back into the barn by the ventilation
system, a gas -trap should be built into the
piping to the storage tank.
By taking proper precautions, producers
can prevent accidents.
"Before pumping manure, the safest
procedure would be to remove all animals and
people from the barn. The next best thing to
do is to open all doors and windows for
maximum ventilation."
"Unclog pipes with special tools that
eliminate the need for ,entering the tank.
Pumps that could clog should be installed so
they can be pulled out of the pumping pit for
service.
Entering manure storages is extremely
dangerous, especially during or following
agitation or pumping.

Never enter a manure tank without being
properly equipped •with air -breathing equip-
ment and a rope safety harness. Have at least
two men standing by on the rope in case of
emergency.
The National Research Counbil's Canadian
Farm Building Code says that covers
providing access to liquid manure storage
tanks should either be larger than their
openings or should be secured with a safety
chain so they can't fall into the storage.
The code also advises farmers to keep all
entries into storage tanks locked and not to
place permanent ladders- in closed liquid
manure tanks.
"Manure gas mishaps are infrequent,
most happen when manure is being pumped,
and many fatalities arehfrcd help and young
hired help and young
people who are unfamiliar with manure
tanks."
