LEGION NEWS George and Jane Case have given me a short summary of their trip overseas, The first two nights they were guests of the Royal British Legion at Crawley, England. They were escorted in by the piper, served afternoon tea, treated to entertainment and fellowship with British Comrades then piped on to their, bus. The next four nights were in France staying at Deauville. They participated in some of the many official ceremonies held for the Canadians but time, distance, crowds and transportation prevented them from attend- ing some they would have personally chosen. June 5 was a tour of the beach where the British and Canadians had landed on D -Day. Lunch in Caen and then to a Memorial service at Benny -Sur -Mer Canadian War Cemetery. This was the Canadian service for Canadian Veterans headed by D.V.A. Minister Bennett Campbell along with the Official Canadian delegation (sent by the Canadian Govern- ment). On June 6, they were at Berniers-Sur-Mur early in the morning to be on the beach for a service where the Canadians had landed 40 years previous. There was a reception at the town hail with the French people hosting them after the service. A visit and lunch at Courseulles and a walk along the beach where quite a few German gun emplacements are still standing, then on to Arromanches to see the remains of Mulberry Harbor and visit the Military Museum, which was crowded with mostly British veterans as they were having a service later in the day with the (Queen attending. The last stop of the day was at Benny -Sur - Mer Canadian Cemetery for a - Special Ceremony with President Mitterand, the Queen and Prince Phillip and Prime Minister Trudeau. In the evening of June 7, they attended the Official D.V.A. reception (sponsored by the Canadian Government) held in a large sports arena in Caen. Of course, this was very crowded but refreshments, dancing and meeting Canadians from everywhere in Canada was enjoyed very much. The rest of the trip was spent touring France, Belgium, Holland, a short trip to a cemetery in Germany and two nights in London, 'England. A few things that will leave a lasting .impression are Vimy Ridge, the large monument, the trenches, grounds around it and the underground tunnel. They will also remember dinner in a cafe in downtown Paris, a visit to the Follies and tour of the "City of Lights" and a boat ride through the Canals of Amsterdam. Cakes star on stage in Blyth third An elaborate wedding cake is the centre of controversy in Cake -Walk, a comedy by Montreal playwright Colleen Curran and the Blyth Festival's third production this season. Although the cake is actually made of styrofoam, it is being professionally decora- ted (with Royal Icing) by Sandra Root who lives just outside Blyth. Sandra has made wedding cakes for many couples in this area. The five cakes starring in this production are: Northern Belle --a close relative of the Southern belle, it's an elaborate concoction that 'looks like it's going to a cotillion". • Cleary Chocolate Cheesecake--"quitepo- ssibly the most decadent dessert ever made". Heaven on Earth Carrot Cake --really healthy, made from "vegetables and all natural ingredients' King Tur Coconut Cake --an archaeological find? Wedding at Tiffany's --a three-tier extra- vaganza decorated with bougainvillea rather than roses. . Also appearing are Laurel Paetz, Anne Anglin, Janet Land, Patricia Vanstone, W. Actors rehearse at ball diamond • The grass is green, the sun is shining... and the actors at the Blyth Festival are Warming up on the baseball diamond. The baseball diamond? Blue City, the ' Festival's fourth new Canadian play this season, is about a women's fastball team in a small town. In addition to regular rehear- sals, the actors have taken time out to get pointers from members of the local women's team. And many of them honed their skills last Sunday when the Blyth Festival .fielded two teams, the Blyth Boomers and the Blyth Booteneers, against teams from Grand Bend's Huron Country Playhouse. Doug Bale, drama critic for the London Free Press (considered eminently neutral by both sides) was one of the umpires. Blue City is written by Layne Coleman, dell -known to festival audiences for his acting and directing, and directed by Janet Amos. The cast includes David Fox, Ron Gabriel, Robert King and Deborah Kimmett- all of whom can also be seen in the extremely popular Garrison's Garage; and Mary Ann DUBLIN & DISTRICT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BINGO FRI., JULY 13 DUBLIN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY CENTRE JACKPOT (500.00 in 50 Calls WINGHAM OPTIMIST MONSTER BINGO Sun.
