KIDS, TEENS AND IN-BETWEENS
..........._.................. .... ....
Innocent people are threatened
BY PATRICIA HEMMER
You hear them at all hours of the day.
They become even louder during the late
evening hours and early hours of the
morning. You can't escape them. They are
everywhere. The more you fear them, the
more threatening they become. It is usually
the innocent that -they harm or even kill,
They are very dangerous.
No, I'm not talking about Gremlins, or
UFO's - they aren't even vicious animals,
hilt they are just as terrifying if you happen
to run into one. These things that I am
talking about are seen most often along the..
highways although they like to appear on
back roads as well. They don't consider
others, for they are only out for the thrills of
driving fast on a hot summer day. You
guessed it, I am talking about the drivers of
speedy vehicles and other hot rods, They
spend their driving hours burning rubber,,
squealing tires and ripping around town,
Surely you have seen such action.
I can't describe to you what these cars or
their drivers look like because the cars come
in all shapes, colors and sizes and their
owners are of many ages. Many of the tire
marks that blacken the road in the summer
are not due to the carelessness • of some
drunk teenager. Some are left by drivers
who have been practising for many years
and are in their 20's and 30's. Although it's
obvious that many convertibles, motorcycles
and other souped up cars are the creators of
screeches and squeals, the typical family car
is quite capable of doing the same.
I suppose this isn't noticeable in the
winter because the weather is sure to slow
drivers down. But once the snow melts and
the weather is warm, there is nothing to slow
down these hot shots, except the occasional
car going the speed limit - something they
detest. The car accidents in the summer are
seldom due to the poor weather conditions as
in the winter.
Instead many summer accidents can be
credited to drinking and driving, careless
driving, speeding or just plain showing off.
It seems that many owners ot cars that can
go 100 miles per hour, have to demonstrate
their toy's power by driving just that fast. I
realize that this is a cheap way to get the
carbon out of your carburetor, but don't do it
Summer first aid a burn is a burn
The basic first aid treatment for a burn is the
same, no master what causes it, and any
number of things can. '
The sun can burn you, so can a sliding rope.
You can burn yourself toasting marshmal-
lows or spilling water at a corn roast.
Electricity, hot motors on boats and mowers,
and chemicals all cause burns. If you suffer a
chemical burn, brush off the chemical
thoroughly under running water. Get out of
contaminated clothing carefully, and do not
get the chemical into your eyes. If that
happens, get under a shower or a gently
running tap to wash it out of your eyes
immediately, and get to a doctor.
St. John Ambulance first aid experts
remind you that you treat minor burns,
including sunburn, by immersing them in
cool water. In the case of mild sunburn, you
may want to apply some cooling lotion. Do not
apply any lotion or ointfnent in the case of a4y
other burn, or in the case of serious sunburn,
just the cool water. It will reduce the heat and
the pain and lessen the chance of further
damage.
If you cannot immerse the burn, cover it
with a clean cloth soaked in clean, cold water,
at the expense of someone's life. It isn't
worth it.
It's not the noise, or the skid marks that
bother the about fast drivers, it's the risk
and threat they put on other innocent
drivers. A family could be coming home
from Grandma's house and run into
someone driving home from a day at the
beach party who is impaired and speeding.
That famil', no matter how nice and how
good they are to their friends and family,
;night not stand a chance of surviving. A
whole carload of people can be wiped out in a
matter of seconds just because someone had
one too many before putting his keys in the
ignition. It isn't fair.
Pedestrians are threatened if a speeding
car decides to cross their path. Cars have
been known to crash into bridges, signs,
posts and even trees. It's nothing to knock
over a pedestrian. Whether careless drivers
injure or kill a pedestrian., another driver or
passengers of that car or passengers of your
awn car, they are still taking life or maiming
people. No one should have the right to do
that.
There have been too many accidents in
this•area -- lives have been taken or messed
up. ,A car accident can happen in seconds.
After an accident, friends and family of
the victim often ask the question, "What if I
had have talked to her a little longer before
she got in the car?" or, "What if I had have
gone with him?" No one really knows. But
I'm sure that if drivers took the responsi-
bility of being sober when they drive and not
driving too fast or carelessly, a lot of lives
would be saved. The life you save could be
your own.
THINK ABOUT IT
If you were killed tomorrow in a car
accident, all your plans for next week would
change. If you killed someone in a car
accident, they would not make it to their hair
appointment on Friday or to the dentist in
two weeks. They would not be alive to send a
birthday card to Aunt Mary who will be 75 in
August. They will not be around to see their
sister's first baby.
Perhaps the person you kill in a car
accident is a baby, a tiny baby who has not
even learned how to smile vet. Or maybe
and change it often. If there is no clean water
immediately available, don't be afraid to
dunk a burn victim in the lake.
Remove anything constrictive such as
;jewelry, belts, or boots before a burned area
starts to swell. Do not try to take off clothing
that is stuck to a burn.
Once you have cooled the burn, cover it
lightly with a clean lint free cloth which will
not stick to the burn. Get to medical help if
necessary, and keep cooling the area on the
way to the hospital. If the burn is severe, do
not give the victim fluids, just moisten his
nose and mouth, Follow the same first aid
procedure, and get medical aid as fast as you
can.
Talk to a burn victim, reassure him and
watch him for shock. You may need to apply
artificial respiration.
Be careful with camp fires and fireplaces
and fire near tents. You should know how to
contact the local fire deparhflent, and you"
should practice a fire drill, especially if you're
a long way from help. If you do have a fire,
don't risk a burn or a life trying to rescue
possessions from a burning tent or cottage.

that baby does smile', a smile that brings Joy
to his parents every day.
Life is taken suddenly and no one has a
chance to say goodbye to the victims, It's
tragic when a person dies whether it's due to
a disease, accident or natural death. A car
accident can cause much shock to the family
because it's so sudden and unprepared. it
can take months, even years fur loved ones
to recover from. it,
The driver of a car who causes death is
human. They do feel very badly and it takes
them a great deal of time to recover as well.
The guilt that they must feel must be
unbearable. However, in order to prevent
such tragedies for everyone involved,
drivers must slow down, and not mix
drinking and driving. It just isn't worth the
risk.
We have already had one accident in
Seaforth this year. The driver of that vehicle
is lucky to be alive. The owner of the vehicle
lost a lot of money but no lives were lost,
That's a blessing. Let's hope this is the first
and last accident that occurs in Seaforth and
area this summer.
