Writer Clair Meredith played by Mary Ann Coles, has two problems when she arrives at the Preston House • writer's block and boyfriend troubles. When she discovers some old papers and diaries of the Preston family, --Ellen, whose husband is in Europe during the First World War, her retarded sister, Anna and their aunt Sarah -- she begins to solve her first problem. The more she reads, the more engrossed she becomes in the dramatic tale of the Prestons, In 1915, the three women in the Preston family are trying to fend for themselve while Ellen's husband was at war. Ell (Laurel Paetz) and 16 -year-old Anna (Jan find) have been living with their aunt Sarah (Beth Amosl for eight years since their parents were killed in a house fire. Anna has remained as an eight-year-old since that fire. When the self-righteous Robert Darsay, played by Gerald Lenton, becomes Anna's tutor, the events begin which eventually lead to tragedy. His experimental teaching methods turn out to be a little bit too successful on Anna who develops a crush on her tutor. But, Darsay is drawn to the elder sister and predictably, Anna witnesses the love scene between he and Ellen during a mashing thunderstorm. Anna is horrified by what she sees because it's a similar scene she witnessed between het parents the night of the fire. She combines her horrible memory with the Bible passages off fire raining down over Sodom and decided to become an avenging angel with poisonous mushrooms. While Clair is glued to the pages of the diaries, which read like a Gothic novel, her H ,y Township Recreation is sponsoring a MYSTERY BINGO Every other Thursday Next bingo Thursday, July 12 (Ice Surface) Zurich Community Centre Jackpot:,. $500, must go • 4 flash games , Bonanza Prize • 1 earlybird Now over 5600 • 10 regular games in 54 calls during this • 1 mystery prize bingo OVER $1500 in cash prizes Bring your dabbers Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Bingo starts at 7;45 p.m. ALL. Alan Byford, played by Andrew Martin Thomson adds most of the life and humor to the play. A big city executive, he is at 'a loss• in the country and walks through every room in the house holding his television set before he realizes there is no electricity. When mitffronted with a fireplace, he looks for the switch to turd it on. Once Alan adjusts to the rustic life, he ends up chopping wood and cooking on a wood stove. But, because he is unable to make a greater commitment to Clair, who wants to have a baby, the fight and he returns to the city. Clair's agent, Val (Jenny Munday) also provides some laughs when she arrives after Alan leaves with a picnic basket full of five cherry cheesecakes, two martini glasses and a giant martini --a bottle of vodka with an PIANO TUNING • REPAIRS • REBUILDING • KEYS RECOVERED • DAMPP.CHASERS • REGULATING BENCHES BRUCE PULSIFER 348.9223 MITC'Eu The OPTIMIST CLUB of Seaforth Travel , The World Lottery . 51400 Trip to Canada East Winner LOUISE SMALE Egmondville Consolation $120 Allan Nicholson Egmondville, • • • • added dash of vermouth and proceeds to cheer up Clair. Finished with 'the diaries, Clair decides to return to the city, with Val to write firer story but not before she says good-byde to the house and exchanges a significant and mysterious look with the ghost-like presence of Ellen. The audience is left wonderine what the link is between the two characters. The setting, the morning room of the Preston house, is wonderfully done with stained lass windows, antique furniture, and a wind-up gramophone which in two scenes plays while both Darsay and Anna and Alan and Clair dance. A Spider in the House, while a little predictable, is good entertainment. Its modern scenes guarantee some comedy while the melodramatic scenes set in 1915 will give you a chill on a hot summer evening. tevefs DISC JOCKEY SERVICE Country Gold & Rock 'N' Roll Good recorded music for Weddings, dances, anniversaries, parries, etc. .
