Perth riding
to retain name
The federal riding of Perth will get to keep
its name and the people of Ottawa will have to
learn there is no connection between this
riding and the eastern Ontario town of the
same name.
MPDr. Harry Brightwell announced at the
inaugural meeting of Perth County council he
has decided to not pursue the matter of
changing the riding's name.
In his last householder, sent out in late
summer, Dr. Brightwell indicated he had
been having a difficult time informing people
of where he is from.
"I'll probably say that I live in Stratford,
but I'm from the riding of Perth," he said.
The reason he won't pursue the idea of
having the name of the riding changed is
because there was.no overwhelming mandate
for him to do so: In the householder,
constituents were asked for their opipion,
either yes or no, on a name change. The
member of federal parliament also asked, if
the name could be changed, what should it be
changed to - Stratford -Perth, Perth -Strat-
ford, or other.
"I received about'300 responses," said the
M P.
Of that number, 55' per cent said they were
in favor of changing the name and 45 per cent
were opposed to a name change.
"In that 45 per cent against, there were
vehement responses," said Dr. Brightwell.
Of those in favor, 33 percent were in favor
of Perth Stratford, 51 per cent in favor of
Stratford -Perth and 16 per cent said other.
The retired veterinarian said the responses
came from all across the riding, "not just the
county, but the city as well."
