Mcllwratth photo Christmas has meaning 'Continued, from Pace B2t fences erected, animals and people moved in, and trees planted. (If' course there are roads that run through the town and even a railway line. complete with train. Every year the scene grows. But that's just a part of our Christmas tradition. Christmas Eve is generally our family night. We attend a family communion early in the evening, then separate for awhile to visit our individual friends, but usually return home to spend the latter part of the evening together. W hat is funny about our Christmases is the way all the members of the family still behave as though they were children. As my brother says. we're probably the only family in existence. with children over 20 -years -of - age. that still revels in the childhood practices, of the season. We still hang our stockings over the fireplace rand there are more there now than in years past t, leave a plate of cookies, a glass (it' milk and a note for Santa, and that has difficulty sleeping Christmas Eve. One of the rules surrounding Christmas Day at our house is no one is allowed to get out of bed before 8 a.m., and most of us adhere to that rule. My youngest sister however finds sleep a difficult thing and more often that not creeps into my bedroom and wakes me from a sound sleep because she can't find it herself. When 8 a.m. finally rolls around, which is usually two to three hours after my sister rouses me, she summons my parents, who are quickly supplied with a mug of coffee (compliments of my sister, and the entire family proceeds to the basement to see if Santa came or not. But the gift giving isn't really a big part of our Christmas, although I can't deny everyone likes that part to some degree. But it seems the members of the family take more joy in picking out appropriate and unique gifts for everyone else. so when it finally comes time to open.the gifts, all that's heard is .. you go first. no. you go first.., until finally it's decided that the youngest starts and the oldest finishes. By 10 or 11 a.m. our house is generally filled with the neighborhood kids come to show us what they got, and -or friends dropping in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. It's that way until about 4 p.m. when we hustle off to a family gathering at my grandmother's home. It's at that time we see the 30 or so relatives we haven't seen sinced the previous Christmas, it's a pretty hectic time, but I imagine moat people, like I do, enjoy the hectic pace of the Christmas season, although they might not admit it at the time. Were it any different, it might be difficult to get that special feeling Ihat's known as. the Christmas spirit. And while I have the opportunity to say it, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas - 1 hope it is a day and a holiday that is filled with all the happiness you n,- handle.
