Tornado procedures are planned
for use in Perth County schools
The image of a school with its roof blown off
during the Barrie tornado disaster resulted in
tornado emergency procedures being made
for Perth schools.
John Richardson, superintendent of in-
struction, told the November 19 meeting of
the Perth County board of education that it is
only by a fluke the students in that Barrie
school had been out of school.
And watching that school on television, has
resulted in a school area emergency informa-
tion line being set up in Perth.
In cooperation with town and city police as
well as the OPP, the London weather office
and CJCS radio station in Stratford, the news
of a severe storm and tornado alert will be
passed on to the education centre in
Stratford. From there the information will be
passed on to the schools.
Once a school has been notified, a weather
watch is set up by the principal. This includes
staff members and student runners (in case
the school's public address system fails).
Mr. Richardson said bus students will not
be sent home if the storm is imminent, A
principal will have to judge the safety factor if
the storm is an hour or more away.
• The schools, said Mr. Richardson, will also
take part in practise drills at least twice a year
- once in September and again in April. These
drills will identify the steps to be taken in case
of an emergency in each school.
