Literary Society formed in 1885 in Seaforth
100 YEARS AGO
A society:mown as the Mechanics Institute
Literary Socitty was formerly organized at a
meeting held in the Mechanics' Institute, on
Tuesday evening last. Mr. S.G. McCaughey
was appointed president; Mr. LE. Dancey,
secretary and Mr. Wm. Moore, treasurer. It
was decided to have a debate and reading,
each alternate Tuesday evening.
Mr. A.W. Thompson, of Port Arthur, a
former Seaforth boy, has been appointed
Police Magistrate for that town.
Rev. T.B. Taylor, formerly of Hayfield, and
well-known throughout the county, is now
stationed as assistant minister at Clontarf,
County Dublin, Ireland. There are about
1,000 people in the parish.

Mr. George Nesbitt, of McKillop, says an

Mrs. H. Phippen, of Winnipeg, is visiting
her sister Mrs. Hugh Stephenson.
Mr. James Berry, of Tuckersmith Town-
ship, has sold his farm lot 8, concession 5, to
Mr. Roger Rice, of Hibbert. The price paid
was in the neighborhood of $7,800 for this
exceptionally good farm, of 100 acres,
50 YEARS AGO
Mayor A.D. Sutherland was elected
President of the Western Ontario 'Hockey
Association at the annual meeting of the
group, held in the Palmerston Town Hall on
Tuesday. A large number of delegates from
this section of the province were in
attendance.
Miss Edith Ennis, of Kitchener, is
spending a week with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. bred Ennis, of Walton.
25 YEARS AGO
SDHS students selected Phyllis Bryans as
the 1960 Snow Queen, A daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. W .R. Bryans, Seaforth, she will ride in
the Seaforth Santa Claus Parade with her
attendants Margaret Ann Stapleton and
Laura Hoggart.
Mike Maloney and 'Roy McQuaid have
returned to the St. Columban area, from the
Western provinces.
Mrs. Dorothy Doig and Mr. Jas, Doig were
installed as Worthy Matron and Worthy
Patron respectively, at a meeting of Seaforth
Chapter 233 Order of the Pastern Star.
