The Huron Expositor, 1985-11-06, Page 20i A20 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, NOVEMBER 6, 1985 Premarriage workshop set Classified cont. A two day premarriaee and newlywed workshop has been held on October 19 and will go again November 16 in an attempt "to give people tools to handle new experiences in marriage,''' said the Reverend. W ilena Brown of Varna. "W a want to help people make their marriage successful." Rev. Brown is the chairperson of a five member committee who organized the marriage preparation workshop held in the auditorium of the Clinton Town Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Although the workshop is sponsored by the Clinton-Seaforth Ministerial Association with the assistance of the Huron Centre For Children and Youth. oeoole from all areas and denominations were welcome to attend. Father Charles Caruana, The Reverend J. Vautslyke, both of Seaforth, the Reverend Gordon Simmons of Clinton, the Reverend Paul Murray of Bavfield and Don KeWor and Sandy Stuart of the Huron Centre organized the two4day event. . --- The morning of October 19 started with Mr. Keillor and facilitators Mr. Stuart and his wife Judy speaking on "what is marriage" and "what is Christian marriage." The Reverend Cheryl Ann Stadelbauer-Sampa, of Egmondville United Church also spoke on the topic of Christian marriage. After lunch. from approximately 2-5:30 p.m. Rev. Simmons discussed commtinicat- ing sexual intimacy and a sex role condition- ing film was shown. Afterwards, public health nurse Ruth Linton and Dr. Peter Salsbury of Clinton discussed creating a family. with "Ruth, is experienced in dealing family planning and respects the beliefs of others," said Rev. Brown who explained the topic will "cover the whole male-female relationship." Also included in the creating a family portion of the workshop were exercises home workbook which will "push them further in thinking of family planning...They will deal with the masculine and feminine roles, styles of showing ldren and, who they talk to whent they have ction to iproblems," said Rev, Brown, The committee had a discussion time after each speaker so all concerns could be addressed. On November 16, the economics of marriage, family law, the working couple, the working person and problem solving will be dealt with. The financial and legal aspects of marriage will be discussed by George Godbolt, an insurance salesman from Exeter and a lawyer (not yet obtained) will handle the legal aspects of marriage. Rev. Vanslyke said the couples were asked to prepare a budget and a statement of their assets and liabilities at the conclusion of the. October 19 session for the November 16 session. "If the changes in the divorce law have been passed, we will present them as well," commented Rev. Vanslyke: Problem solving will deal with the way problems are handled. "We want to start people thinking about questions that are important to a successful marriage," said Rev. Brown, citing a few sample questions such as:. . -Do you and your partner think problems will go away in time? -Does your partner's smoking, drinking or lateness bother you? -Do you avoid talking about subjects you know will upset your partner? Mr. Keillor and counsellors from the Huron Centre for Children and Youth will hold a one hour problem Solving session following Rev. Brown's discussion. The latter portion of the day will be a general discussion time with the facilitators and speakers. During this time, interfaith marriages will be discussed. The conclusion will involve a drawing of insights and an evaluation of how effective the course is. "This is the first time we have held a course like this and we want to know the participants'' thoughts.... Perhaps we will check back with them in six months or so." said Rev. Brown, Rev. Brown also said that the ideal time for people to attend the marriage and newlywed workshop would be at the date setting stage or after they have been married up to one year. "All churches stress the importance of marriage preparations. Some churches re- quire at least four sessions with the person who is marrying them and all churches are moving in this direction," stated Rev. Brown. "This workshop will show a visible co-opera- tion between the denominations."
