The Huron Expositor, 1985-10-16, Page 18
A18 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 16, 1985 Huron schools need many repairs Almost a quarter of a million square feet of roof is up for replacement at Huron County schools. The roofs, along with a couple of boilers and an elevator on the Huron County board of education's • annual list of items that need replacing. The list gets sent to the ministry of education for approval and funding. The 1986 list includes the replacement of 248,991 square feet of roof at seven elementary schools and four high schools. Director of Education Robert Allan said the London office of the education ministry has informed him that Huron has been allotted $200,000 for roof replacements. Not only will that not cover the costs for all the roofs, but the local school board doesn't get the chance to choose which roof jobs need to be clone first, says Mr. Allan. The London office does that. For next year, the school board would like to see a new boiler in Seaforth Public School and Vanastra Public School. Mr. Allan said over the past 10 years. the ministry has approved about four or five new boilers for Huron schools. Something new for the school board is to be applying for an elevator for Victoria Public School in Goderich, The director said the elevator will be beneficial in this two-storey school so children in wheelchairs or others can get to the second floor. This is a particular need at this school with the library on the second floor. It will be some time before the board learns if the items have been approved. Atlas launching takes place in one week Premier David Peterson can't make it and neither can minister of citizenship and culture Lily Munro, but the biggest publish- ing event in Huron County will be launched anyway. Huron County council learned at its October 10 session the 1985 historical atlas is nearing the day when it will reach the public. Atlas co-ordinator Bev Brown said those And the launching will take place at 4 p.m. -wishing to pick up atlases can do so from 10 on Wednesday, October 23 either inside or "a.m. on October 23 every week day until outside the court house in Goderich, November 6. Trustees retiring from Huron board Two trustees on the Huron County board of education have announced they will not be returning next year. Longtime board member Clarence McDon- ald of Exeter and Murray Mulvey of RR 1, Clifford announced at the school board's October 7 meeting they will not seek re-election in the municipal election this fall. Mr. McDonald said after this school year he will no longer have children in the school system and it is time for a change. He has represented the Exeter area since 1969 on the county board. Prior to that, he served on the Exeter School Board since 1958. Mr. McDonald said health reasons also indicated it is time to turn the reins over to someone else. Mr. Mulvey represents the ratepayers of Wingham, and the townships of Hdwick and Turnberry. He noted there are two repre- sentatives from that area, The other is. Art Clarke from Wingham. He does have concerns the rural ratepayers won't be represented because, to him, there appears to be a lack of interest. Mr. Mulvey wants to spend more time with his family and that is Why he is leaving the school board. All other trustees said they would be seeking re-election in their respective areas which are as follows: Dorothy Wallace is seeking re-election in . the Town of Goderich; Joan Vanden Broeck is running in the townships of Goderich and Colborne; Mr. Clarke from Wingham is seeking another term in that area; Graeme Craig and John .Jewitt are the representatives for Seaforth and the townships of Hullett and McKillop and are seeking re-election; John Elliott is running again in,'Blyth and East W aw,anosh and Morris Townships, Frank Falconer again wants the trustee- ship in Clinton and Tuckersmith Township; Dr. John Goddard wants to be re-elected for NEW SONS TEACHERS—Four new faces greeted the students of Seaforth District High School, when they returned in early September.
