New teaching ideas for
Perth County students
Humans learn from their mistakes.
A well-known fact, but only recently has it
become the basis of educational theory.
"It's okay to he wrong,". says the Perth
County board of education primary consult-
ant Sharon Abbey, "that's how we learn."

Teaching theories are starting to reflect
that idea rather than condemning mistakes.
in one subject - composition or creative
writing • children in the Kindergarten to
Grade 3 level are encouraged to express
themselves without emphasis on spelling and
grammatical errors. Ms. Abbey says its the
creative thought being developed, although
spelling and grammar won't be ignored
completely, just dealt with in different areas.
During the last school year. the primary
consultant conducted workshops to introduce
the new theory and some of the teaching
practices involved, to the primary teachers.
The teachers' thoughts on these workshops
were present at the school board's October 1
meeting.

Perth County
eyes landfill site
The location of a landfill site for four
municipalities in eastern Perth County and
the provincial financing program are two
items the Perth County federation of
agriculture will be watching in the coming
year.
So says the renamed county federation
president Dave Smith of RR 1, Sebringville
'Mr. Smith was again named to the position at
the federation's annual meeting on October 8
in Kirkton. -
Four municipalities. Milverton and the
townships of Mornington and North and
South Easthope are together looking for a
landfill site. They are currently using
Waterloo's, but that agreement has about
three years to go
Mr. Smith said the federation is keeping an
eye on the situation
As for OF'hTH, the Ontario Family Farm
Interest Rate Reduction, a one-year S50
million provincial government emergency aid
program, the federation wants to encourage
people to make use of the funding
"It will go fast," said Mr Smith admitting
agriculture needs some long term solutions
Other executive members named at the
annual meeting are first vice•president Bill
Denham of RR 1, St Marys and Paul Verkley
of Atwood.
The regional directors are Wayne Hartung
of RR 1. Gowanstown for Perth north, Brenda
Ward of RR , Monkton for Perth east Jim
Tyler of RR 7, St Marys for Perth south and
