Character is a by-product, and any man that devotes himself to its cultivation in his own case will become a selfish prig: W oodrow W ilson This Friday, October 11, drop in at the Brussels library for the Majestic W I will be having a Thanksgiving Bazaar and Bake Sale. There you may find things for Christmas giving as well as tasty home baked food for your table. Don't overlook the deli featuring meat pies, homemade jam and chili among other goodies. Great! Just Great! The Toronto Blue Jays have punctured the inflated ego of the New York Yankees. On Saturday they claimed the championship of the AE Division and won the right to meet the winner of the Western Division in the World Series. The Blue Jays celebrated their victory with champagne, they drank it and were drenched with it. Their Toronto fans were out by the thousands expressing their exuberent enthusiasm in the streets. Those across Canada watching at home, it is sure, were just as jubilant. The defeat of the Yankees was especially sweet in the face of the discourteous behavior of the Yankees and their fans — the uncalled nasty remarks and the booing of the Canadian National Anthem in the Yankee stadium. Golfing SHORT SHOTS by Evelyn Kennedy (Continued from Page A7 ride in a cart and you should have no trouble keeping limbered up and warm. Drink hot soup and enjoy warm food before heading out ' and between 9s. Forget alcohol. It only gives you a feeling of warmth that actually does you more harm than good. You may have tb change your technique somewhat in cold weather: It is wise to choke down on the shaft of the club, much as you would do in the ' wet weather. However concentrate on making a full turn. Generally this is where most golfers lose shots in cold weather. Golfers stiffen up and shorten the turn losing distance, rhythm, and their usual successful swing. Play the ball farther back in your stance and just sweep the ball off the ground. Hard ground is no place to take a divot, In cold air the ball won't fly as far as it normally would, so remember that in your club selection. This effect is doubled when you take into account that you are already choking down on the dub. Don't let your pride interfere with proper club selection. It's not how, it's how many. Some golfers will also elect to play a lower compressioned ball than normal, If you get into a frozen bunker use your putter to get out safely, Give your pitching wedge a rest too around the greens and use your4, 5, or6 iron to run the ball up to the pin. Hit your putts firmly to cancel out the fact that greens may not be as well manicured and smooth in the cold fall weather. Much rof cold weather technique must be learned by trial and error. Even what is worn is a matter of personal preference. Hopefully these tips will allow you to lengthen your golf season. We'll be a long time shovelling once that white stuff comes. Saturday at 2 p.m. is the final event on our golfing calendar. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the golf followed by a potluck supper. You'll even have a chance to win your holiday turkey. There was none of that by Canadians for what we can be proud. The Jays won with dedication and desire. They came through with home runs, excellence in pitching and in the field when it was most needed. Congratulations to the Blue Jays and the best of wishes, for success in the 'World Series. Win or lose your fans will be with you all the way. A Wedding! What happier occasion could there be than the fulfilment of loves young dream? The bride resplendent in her bridal gown; her lovely attendants beautifully dressed; the male members of the bridal party handsome in wedding apparel; the church with flowers, candlelight and soft music of the organ; the quiet voices of the couple as they plight their solemn troth; guests filled with heartfelt wishes that for these two young people loves young dream will be fulfilled through the years to come. "I've just entered the political arena, and it already looks more dangerous than the battlefield. There at least you're fighting the enemy. In politics you have to fight all sides — including your own. Quote: Major General Ariel Sharon Pity P.M. Mulroney! He is no Major General and there are Canadians having doubts these days that he possesses the character required to be an acceptable prime minister. It is unfortunate that in 'the past weeks his integrity has been challenged. Jerry Lampert, National Director of the P.C. party has resigned. It came as the result of controversy over the resignation of Communications Minister Masse because of RCMP investigation of his overspending in last year's election campaign. Lampert said he had told "senior people" in the Prime Minister's office several months ago about the RCMP investigation. Mulroney vehe- mently denied that any of his senior aides had talked with the National Director about the investigation. He insisted that he was told about it only hours before the Communica- tions Minister resigned. So, once again the Prime Minister's integrity is in question.
