The ball will come in to the green from u
higher trajectory and have a better chance of
stopping fast even though the wet conditions
have reduced the backspin on the ball.
Keep your spikes cleaned off during your
round m wet weather. You'll find they tend to
get all clogged up with grass and mud which
reduces the effectiveness of having golf shoes
on at all. After every hole take a tee and knock
off the accumulated dirt, Let your spikes do
their job.
When you get to the green you will have to
cope with putting on a wet surface, (the same'
is true for early morning golfers who must
putt on dewy greens). The moisture will slow
the ball down so you must hit the ball much
firmer to get it to the hole. The water will also
prevent the ball from following. the contour of
the green or"break." So allow for only about
half the break you would expect on a dry
green. •
All the good technique in the world is
' useless if your' feet are squishing in your
shoes and your slacks are sticking , to you.
Then there is the rain dripping off your visor
and the end of your nose. Being as
comfortable as possible in the rain is
important too. If it's not a competition you're
not going to begin your golf in the rain (unless
you're a fanatic) but in the autumn you never

yoq Be prepared taking along an umbrella
and a towel...the towel is for the clubs. The
new rain suits are so light, quiet and
'comfortable you can carry one in the extra
.pouch of your golf bag just in case. They sure
make a difference in a downpour.
Many golfers tuck their golf pants in their
socks on wet days to keep the bottom of the
pants dry and clean.
Waterproof shoes are ideal and there are
Duck hunters
(Continued from Page Al1)
least way resembles a duck. Despite the fact
the guys trekked off to the marshlands
bedecked in camouflaged coveralls and hats,
recycled army fatigues, hip waders and a
number of shotguns I don't really think they
want to catch ducks at all. Instead I have the
sneaking suspicion the "hunt" is merely
another opportunity for them to congregate
as the guys, another excuse for them to eat
excessively, and another reason for them to
go crazy.
I guess if I do get another opportunity to
commune with nature and seek out ducks I'll
see just what these hunts ARE all about.
Unfortunately from the stories I've heard I
may not actually geta chance to partake in the
many.new styles on the market mowing
waterproof leather that combines the best of
comfort and service. A change of socks In
your golf bag will sure make the back nine
more comfortable in wet weather too.
Golfing in the rain is not the most fun in the
world, but a few damp fall days shouldn't
prevent a keen player from enjoying his
sport. When the raindrops falling around you
have six sides.., then it's time to quit for the
winter.
'this year a winners of the Golf Digest Most
Improved Golfer Awards at our local course
are Marc Robinet who reduced his handicap
from a 12 to a 7, Barbara Watson who went
from a 40 to a 32, Karsten Carroll who
improved from a 38 to an 18 and Jennifer
Watt who went from a ,39 to a 34.
Congratulations to all our golfers. Don't
forget the Turkey Shoot on Saturday, October
12. It's a fun 2 -ball for the whole family,
sport. More than likely, (I'm told) my role will
be that of Retriever - if there's anything' to
retrieve.
But then again I might be condemned to.
