Nature bent on venting wrath
Beautiful women are so often like a rose, so
lovely in their perfection but overblown and
faded. - Anonymous.
Nature seems bent on venting vengeful
wrath on mankind these days with ruinous
quakes and Friday last a hurricane. Gloria
battered the U.S. northeastern states with
210 kilometer winds, torrential rain and
pounding surf. It sent 250,000 people fleeing
inland along 1,200 kilometers of coastline.
Warnings were issued Friday of strong winds
and heavy rain in the Maritimes. Downed
trees and power lines left 2.5 million people of
Long Island and six New England states
without electricity. Utility officials said more
than one million remained without power on
Saturday. Fortunately Gloria was not as
severe as had been expected but damages
would still be in millions of dollars.
There. was also a storm in Canada last week
that continues to stir considerable agitation.
It was not of nature's making. It blew up the
so-called "Tuna Fish Scandal" and involves
politicians and government of New Bruns-
wick and our Federal government. Fisheries
Minister John Fraser resigned after releasing
almost one million cans of tuna that federal
inspectors had reported them rancid and
unfit for human consumption. Opposition
MPs claimed he may have been forced to
resign because he publicly disagreed with
Prime Minister Mulroney. Mulroney is in hot
water because he said the issue "was never

brought to my attention before the story was
broadcast by the CRC," Others said he was
informed earlier. He has denied charges that
he was involved in a ooverup of the tainted
tuna scandal.
There was extensive sale of the tuna before
it was ordered removed from store shelves.
There have been no reported bad effects from
consumers, not even of a bad smell from fglks
with a sensitive nose but there has been an
odious stench wafting on the winds of hot air
emanating from the House of Commons in
Ottawa.
The back lawn, where stands a spreading
chestnut tree, presents a scene of activity
these days. It is littered with neatly halved
chestnut husks, the nuts gone. This the work
of squirrels busy gathering and•hoarding nuts
for winter food. For many years their
to-and-fro passage to the chestnut tree past
the kitchen window was watched with
amused interest. Of late they are seldom
caught sight of. Presumably they are wary of
my dog Sheba. They travel via tree tops and
roof to avoid her. She frequently spots them
and protests with sharp barks their intrusion
on her premises. Squirrels, wise wild
creatures. They provide for times of scarcity
something humans do not always seem to
have the good sense to do.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, a former U.S.
president, was not without a sense of humor.
When he was once in bed with a cold it was
reported in the Washington Post -- but the
early "Bulldog" edition made a classical
typographical error. An eight column, head-
line in large type said F.D.R. in be with coed.
A cub reporter answered an early phone call
to hear the familiar booming voice say: This is
Franklin D. Roosevelt. I'd like 100 copies of
the first edition of the Post. I want to send
them to all my friends." ,
Can you imagine our Prime Minister
accepting such an error just that way?
Those who like to quench their thirst with
the foamy suds will have to fork out more cash
fortheirbeer. There was an across-the-board
increase on Tuesday. Why not switch to
Adam's Ala (water), refreshing tax free.
Come to think about it the government must
surely have some way to get us even on
Adam's Ale.
Hullett council endorse resolution
Hullett Township Council has endorsed a
resolution initiated by the Huron County Pork
Producers, urging the provincial government
to grant "immediate financial assistance," to
the red meat producers of Ontario.
The pork producers contend Ontario red
meat producers are "suffering severe finan-
cial problems," due to unfair competition
from producers in provinces (Quebec and
Saskatchewan) where the'government heav-
ily subsidizes farm products.
The resolution, endorsed by council at a
special meeting held September 17, calls for
the Ontario government to subsidize the
province's red meat producers, "only until"
removal of the competing subsidies in other
provinces."
In other business at the special meeting,
the council agreed to look into the possibility
of constructing street lights in Kinburn, at
