Great future
is anticipated
for immersion
Despite a drop in the expected number of
students in French immersion classes in
Stratford and Goderich, a spokesman for the
Huron -Perth Roman Catholic separate school
board predicts a great future for the program.
Superintendent of education Gaeten,
Blanchette told the September 9 meeting of`
the Catholic school board no students have
been withdrawn from the program since it
started on September 4.
However, less staff are needed at the
Stratford school because, of the .drop in
numbers. Only 55 Kindergarten, Grade 1 and
2 students showed up at St. Michael's in
Stratford to take part in the French
immersion program. This compares to an
expected number of 76.
The school board has reduced the number
of full-time teaching positions in the French ,
immersion program at Stratford from three to
two.
Goderich has three full-time teaching
positions for 64 students. A total of 68
students were expected.
Mr. Blanchette said most of the students
pulled from the program before it started
actually moved away. He did say though,
some children did turn to the public school
system which doesn't offer French immer-
sion.
Riddell to speak
at annual meeting
Provincial agriculture minister Jack Rid-
dell will be the guest speaker at the Perth
County Federation of Agriculture's annual
meeting on Tuesday, October 8,
Mr. Ricjdell, the MPP for Perth's neighbor
- Huron -Middlesex - is expected to start
speaking around 8:15, following the banquet
being held at the Kirkton Community Centre
in Kirkton. '
This year, the federation is combining its
Ontario Federation of Agriculture regional
meeting with the annual meeting. The
regional meeting is held to elect directors to
the OFA's board of directors. Also, delegates
to the OFA's annual convention in Toronto at
the end of November will be elected,
The county federation will also elect a
county president, vice-presidents and town-
ship directors.
For $8 per person tickets, call president
Dave Smith at 393-5908 or secretary Agnes
Denham at 229-6430.

take a new approato the problem of
installingw
en -min under the CNR railway
crossing on J ' Street.
The original Ian had been to bore a
paccegeway for the watermain under the
tracks, but a t attempt at that method
proved the ground too rocky to dig straight
through.
An alternate method requires the railway
tracks to be ripped up so an open cut can be
made. A site meeting between the PUC
engineer and CNR representatives has been
set up for Tuesday, September 17 and if the
process can be agreed upon. work will he
done on September 21.
"We want to review the situation, know
exactly what we're doing and do it without
any hitches, said Mr. Phillips.
In other business the commission was
• informed by Mr, Phillips a temporary power
supply has been in place at Maplewood
Manor to power the building's lighting and
elevator system. A transformer ordered to
