Pigs sold easier. There were 778 cattle and 721 pigs on offer, Choice Steers -71.50 to 75.00 with sales to 76.50. Good Steers -69.00 to 72.00. Eleven steers consigned by Ken Mcfanch- vy of RR 3, Parkhill averaging 1158 lbs. sold for 76.50 with his load of 34 steers averaging 1198 lbs. selling for an overall price of 75.56. Ten steers consigned by Jim Howell of RR I , l.ondesboro averaging 1209 lbs. sold for an overall price of 74.97 with a sale to 76.00. Five steers consigned by Slam Farms of RR 4, Kincardine averaging 1258 lbs, sold for 74.30 with their lot of 13 steers averaging 1302 lbs. selling for 72.94.. Six steers consigned by John VanNynatten of RR 5, Mitchell average g 1260 lbs. sold for 72.85, Nine steers consigned by Rae Zettler of W alkerton averaging 1143 lbs. sold for an overall price of 73.53 with sales to 75.50; Five steers consigned by Jim Poortinga of RR 1, Woodham averaging 1186 lbs. sold for 73.50 with his lot of 13 steers averaging 1138 lbs. selling for 72,05. Farm animals show 4 per cent decline Estimates released from Statistics Canada show the number of cattle and calves on farms in Canada on July 1, 1985 to be 11,733,400 head, a 4 per cent decline from a year ago and a 25 per cent decline from the 1975 all time high of 15,622,000. There is also evidence that the breeding herd is declining. There was a 4 per cent year over year drop in beef cow numbers bringing those numbers to their lowest level since 1969. In line with this, cow slaughter, as a percentage of total cattle and calf slaughter, has been increasing, moving from 17 per cent P,gs on Farms n Canada, by Quartors. 1977.1985 B in 1981 to 20.8 per cent in 1984.
