Farm animals show 4 per cent decline
Estimates released from Statistics Canada
show the number of cattle and calves on
farms in Canada on July 1, 1985 to be
11,733,400 head, a 4 per cent decline from a
year ago and a 25 per cent decline from the
1975 all time high of 15,622,000.
There is also evidence that the breeding
herd is declining. There was a 4 per cent year
over year drop in beef cow numbers bringing
those numbers to their lowest level since
1969. In line with this, cow slaughter, as a
percentage of total cattle and calf slaughter,
has been increasing, moving from 17 per cent

same period for 1984. However, they are
down from a peak in the first quarter of 1985,
indicating a slowing of this trend.
Sheep and lamb numbers in Canada
declined 5 per cent from July 1, 1984. This
Canada's pig population decreased slightly reflects a 3 per cent decline in the East and a 9
from a year ago to 10,751,900 pigs, The .per decline in the West,
breeding herd, however, is down 2 per cent These results and more will be published in
from July 1, 1984. Third and fourth quarter mid September in the quarterly publication
farrowings for 1985 are expected to decrease 23-008 livestock Report.
The dairy cow population now estimated at
