Perth voters
Perth voters in the November 12 municipal
election may have a chance to indicate their
opinion of full funding for Catholic secondary
schools.
The Perth County Board of Education
approved asking the 16 municipalities in the
county if they would hold a referendum on the
full funding issue.
"We have to keep trying," said Stratford
trustee Paul Parlee on the school board's
attempts to stop full funding. "We can't lie
down and die."
The school board's action follows the lead
set by other school boards in the province.
Perth received requests to ask for the
referendum from the Durham board of
education (Oshawa) and a Toronto based

SEPTEMBER 11, 1985 —DUBLIN AND AREA
get chance to speak out
group calling itself The Coalition for Public
Education.
"I'm speaking in favor of the Durham
board's request," said Mr. Parlee who is
chairman of the board's ad hoc committee on
the extension of funding. to Catholic schools.
Currently, Catholic schools are funded by
the provincial government to the end of
Grade 10. In Perth County, the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic separate school board
operates elementary schools from Kindergar-
ten to Grade 8. The Catholic school board
plans to open a high school in the current
Grade 7 and 8 school, St. Michael's, in
Stratford. •
Mr. Parlee said he expects about 70 per
cent of those voting across the province this
fall will• be against full funding.
This, he said will make the provincial
government take notice. And that is the
purpose of holding a referendum in Mr.
Parlee's opinion.
He didn't say there wouldn't be a Catholic
high school in Stratford in 1986. He did say
though, that in his opinion, 75 per cent of the
Perth voters are opposed to full funding. Mr.
Parlee added that the Catholic population in
Perth is, only about 15 per cent.
The two trustees on the public school board
who represent the Catholic ratepayers on
secondary school issues, voted against asking
for a referendum.
"It's just a waste of money," said Howard
Shantz noting that only one of all the
provincial MPPs has said he is against full
funding.
The Catholic representative .said the
referendum would only garner a lot of
publicity. Mr. Shantz commented that he and
his Catholic colleague, Don Crowley of RR 2,
Gadshill haven't spoken out on the question
of full funding because they don't want to get
into a dispute on religious grounds.
"It's just not worth it," he said.
Mr. Parlee said the board would approach
each municipality individually rather than at
the county council level.
The board has to act quickly, said Mr.
Parlee, because if the municipalities want the
question on the Nov. 12 ballot, public notices
have to be published in local newspapers
before'Oct. 12, one month before the election.
The question that could be placed' on the
ballot is - "Do you favor the extension of
funding to the Roman Catholic separate
secondary schools? Yes? No?
Full funding question is filed
