Order of Canada award for her -work in the
education field asked that the CBC -TV series
not use the Sloman name in their production.
A modest woman, Mrs. Sloman prefers to
maintain a low, profile. However, Pinsent has
based much of his television production on
the Sloman story.
Pinsent plays the part of Jack Morrissey, a
disillusioned teacher whose methods are no
longer welcome in the private school system.
He is forced to resign and decides to visit his
chronically ill teenage daughter Neila, at a
convalescent home north' of Sudbury. While
there, Jack realizes that he and Neila need to
spend more time together, and he accepts a
job that he really isn't interested in -- as a
teacher of a probationary "school on
wheels. " The school is a refurbished railway
car, shunted up and down the rail line out of
Sudbury, stopping "in the middle of
nowhere" for a few days, serving whoever
comes out of the bush to learn.
The immigrants, trappers, natives, miners
and railway workers in the isolated bush
communities. don't readily accept Mr. Mor-
rissey, Then he begins to realize that
teaching these people and their children is
the ultimate challenge of his career- that he is
their only hope of achieving an education.

THE HURON EXPOSITOR, SEPTEMBER 4, 1985 — A15
Clinton school car to be subject of CBC -TV drama
The story of the Sloman family of Clinton
and the School on W heels will be the basis for
the new CBC -TV drama starring Gordon
Pinsent.
"And Miles To 'Go," written by and
starring Mr. Pinsent will be telecast on
Wednesday, September 11 at 9 p.m. as part
of Canada W eek.
The pilot episode is based on the true life
experiences of Fred and Cela Sloman and
their teaching experiences in northern
Ontario. For 39 years, starting in the .1920s,
,the late Mr. Slornan, his wife and five
children, made theirhome and workplace in a
converted CNR railway coach, known as the
School on Wheels.
The railway car, now based in Clinton,
travelled a 148 mile line of tracks between
Caperol and Foleyet bringing education to
isolated northern families.
Children and adults alike sought education
and friendship in the warmth of the Sloman
farrWyschoolhouse. Over 1,000 children who
came out of the bushlands graduated from
the School on Wheels.
Today the School on . W heels has a
permanent home in Clinton's Sloman 'Me-
morial Park. Extensive renovations are being
made to the old railway coach to restore it to
its original state.

Seniors will
get grant forms
next week
Over half a million Ontario senior citizens'
households will receive 1985 property tax
grant application forms next week. The forms
are being mailed to seniors who have in the
past been eligible for the grant and have paid
either property tax or rent on eligible
properties during 1985.
An interim instalment, equal to one-half of
the 1984 property tax grant entitlement, was
mailed to these eligible seniors last April.
Once completed forms have been received
and processed, the Ministry of Revenue will
begin mailing the final instalment cheques on
October 25. The maximum annual property
tax grant is $500 per household.
Anyone who turned 65 before July 1 will
also receive an application, while those who
turned 65 on or after July 1 will be mailed
applications byJanuaryot 1986, All first-year
recipients will receive their grant in one lump
sum, and in future years will receive the grant.
in two instalments, one in the spring and one
in the fall.
"In all, we are sending out over 635,000
property tax grant applications," says Robert
Nixon, Ontario's Revenue Minister," which
will help offset the property and school taxes
paid by our seniors. I urge those who are
filling out the form to he as accurate as
possible, to take their time and to call us at
our toll-free information centre if they have
questions."
The deadline for filing a 19$5 property tax
grant application is December 31, 1986.
