The Huron Expositor, 1985-08-28, Page 20gA-CONM11.1. * f A20 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, AUGUST 28, 1985 ENTERTAINMENT Grand Bend alive with The Sound of Music BY JULIE MacDONALD The much -loved Rodgers and Hammer- stein musical, The Sound of Music, enchant- ed an attentive capacity crowd opening night, August 21, in Grand Bend's Huron Country Playhouse, Maria Rainer, a young postulant at the abbey in Nonnberg, Austria, is sent to become governess to the seven children of Captain George von Trapp. Through her patience and understanding, Maria wins the love of the children and introduces them to the world of music. She brings, the children and, their father closer together, and in the process, wins the love of Captain von Trapp for herself. Based on the lives of the real von Trapp • • family, Austrian citizens in the late 1930s, who delighted audiences in Europe, and later in America, with their folk singing, The Sound of Music also recounts the family's flight into exile upon the rise of the Nazis. Though they had lived in an Austrian castle, the von Trapps were forced to turn their singing hobby into a professional skill in order to survive. The casting is, in a word, superb. Deborah Tennant captures the sincerity and strength of Maria, and the freedom she finds in song. Her rapport with the children creates some of the show's most memorable moments -- teaching them to, sing with the "Do Re Mi" song, calming their fears in a thunderstorm with the alpine ballad "The Lonely Goat- OLF DR I n First customers to enjoy NEW GOLF DRIVING RANGE, which opened last holiday weekend, were BRAD KING and his son from Clinton. The high degree of vocal expertise, especially the a cappella selections by the abbey nuns, help to sustain moods throughout the musical selections aiding continuity and flow. The standing ovation opening night should be indication enough of the thoroughly enjoyable evening of theatre that awaits the patrons of The Sound of Music. It runs until the season's end, September 7, at the Playhouse in Grand Bend. Pantnsy world compensates BYJUL,IE MacDONALD A last minute replacement to the previous- ly scheduled play"Sleeping Arrangements" in Grand Bend's . Playhouse II, "Stage - fright," a new Canadian musical by Jim Betts, is based on "psychodrama," the use of a fantasy world of acting to compensate for the unsatisfactory portions of life. The characters learn that their attempts to alter the courses 'of their livesonly produce disappointment. So does the play itself. The irony of the title, "Stagefright," lies in the fact that the characters are afraid of what life holds in store for them, especially the 21 -year-old author, Claire, terrified of proceeding through the stages of her life, attempting to hide within the confines of various plays. The musical revue is designed to poke fun at the world of theatre with parodies of "Don Giovanni," "A Doll's House," and "Private STAG for Bill Flanagan SAT., SEPT. 7th For information ph. 345.2480 Guitar Drums Accordion Lessons Register NOW for September *Instruments available Phone: Paul Stevenson 482-3597 \\\\\ \\\\\ \\\\\ \\\\\ \\\ Laves" but the preview performance audi- ence did not quite know how to take it. The 20 -odd musical numbers were met with only polite applause. The music was simple, and the lyrics predictable, and the bringing together of a young female writer with an , eccentric but energetic divorced couple (second-rate actors who are hired to impro- vise her ideas) seems too improbable to lend the play any believability. "Stagefright" stars David Nairn (star of the opening Playhouse II season) and Alicia Jeffery as the "performers," and Janet MacEwen as the paranoid author. The three member cast makes the most of the script, resulting in a few memorable moments and some chuckles, but the audience leaves the theatre feeling unsatisfied. "Stagefright" plays in Grand Bend until August 31. .Stevens DiSC JOCKEY SERVICE Country Gold & Rock 'N' Roll Good recorded music for weddings, dances, annlversarIes, parties, etc. Phone Brussels evenings & afternoons 887-6159 Happy 32nd Birthday Bonnie Beuerman August 31 STING DRIVE-IN THIS WEEKEND ONLY ifFilnllzr RO'B AT MMUS rr, Ha was new in Howe for his classes...
