River Street
Band retains
its identity
There's a certain risk clone bands run. The
risk is they'll try so hard to imitate their
mentors, they'll eliminate any trace of their
own personality.
The Raver Street Band, which played the
Queen's Hotel Wednesday night, skirts
around that problem nicely.
"We have a different approach," says
guitarist Les Hoffman. "We don't try and
play it note for note."
They have made a career of covering the
songs and stylings of the Boss, Bruce
Springsteen, who is just about the industry's
hottest commodity right now. So, any band
which does even a respectable job of
imitating him is bound for glory.
Their approach really is different. Hoffman
is right; they don't just repeat every single
nuance of the original songs. They imbue the
work with a fresh originality.
Oh sure, they sound like Springsteen. And
lead singer Don Denaburg even looks a little
like him, except for about 50 pounds of pure
beefcake.
But they take the time to inject some of
themselves into the performance too. For
example, whereas the E Street Band, which '
backs up the Boss, is not known for letting its
members shthe through their solos, the River
Streeters have no aversion to it at all. In fact,
in many respects, the soloing was one of the
hottest aspects of the show.
Denaburg, the singer, has Springsteen's
mumble and toothy grin down pat. His one
fault, though, is he tries too hard to be
photogenic. like Springsteen, he's got lots of
natural charisma, and would do far better just
to let that shine through.
The closest the band mine to Springsteen's
actual sound was on the haunting Pm On
Fire" from the Born in the USA album. The
vocal resemblance was positively eerie.
They did one of their own original pieces in
the fust act: a non-descript little pop ditty
called, On The Street Where You Live. It's
not a bad tune, but it lacks Springsteen's
coursing power. It also makes the mistake of
so many clone bands who try to strike it out on
their own with original material: They try too
hard to make the cliches work. The problem
is, when a Springsteen invents these sounds,
they're not cliches. But in the hands of
novices, that's what they become.
One of the more interesting sights on stage
was bass player and part-time singer Richard
Simpkins. When not singing, he's an
immobile tower of Babel. His serpentile
fingers grasp the neck of the instrument in
what appears to be a permanent (and
terminal) stranglehold, but his face shows
flickers of life only when he's straining for the
high notes.
In person, they come across as a likeable
bunch of guys. On stage, one gets the
impression that while they're serious about
their music, they're not beyond having a little
fun with it.
The River Street Band hasn't quite
mastered Springsteen's subtleties. But then
maybe they're not trying.
NOT EXACTLY BORN IN THE USA—The River Street Band, which covers songs by pop
megastar Bruce Springsteen, played at the Queen's Hotel in Seaforth Wednesday night. Sax
player, Steve Dudek, asked where he calls home, is as likely to say "eastern Europe" and
"Mississauga." Which one it is remains a mystery. (Till photo)
