Antigone examines the meaning of human_ existence
• • •
BY JULIE MacDONALD
Antigone, the last in Sophocles' Theban
Trilogy, dramatizes the final tragic account in
the House of Oedipus on Stratford's Third
Stage.
In the :aitial drama, Oedipus, King of
Thebes, unknowingly marries his mother and
together they have four children. When
Oedipus discovers his incest, he blinds
himself so he may never again look upon his
loved ones.
As Antigone opens, Oedipus has died and
his two sons have killed each other in a battle
over the throne. Creon, the closest in line to
the kingship, has assumed the throne and, in
an attempt to establish his power, has
decreed one of Oedipus' sons will be given a
state funeral with pomp and honors, but the
other (whom he labels a traitor to his country)

will be left to rot where he fell in battle. Any
citizen daring to give him burial, or even to
mourn, will be punished by death.
King Oedipus has also left two daughters
Antigone and Ismene. The strong-willed
Antigone refuses to abide by Creon's edict
and administers burial rites to her brother's
fallen corpse, despite the fact she is aware of
the penalty of death which awaits her.
Upon learning of her disobedience, Creon
sentences Antigone to be sealed alive in a
sepulchre, oblivious to the pleas of his son
Haemon whom Antigone is to marry.
Haemon reiterates the feelings of the
citizens --that Antigone's punishment is
unjustified --but Creon's pride refuses to
allow him to reverse the first major decision
he has made as head of state. Through his
steadfastness, Creon destroys not only the
life of Antigone, but also his own life through
the ensuing suicides of his own son arid wife.
The real tragedy lies in the fact Creon is
essentially not an evil figure; he succumbs to
pride, a common flaw from which to suffer.
Sophocles explores the very meaning of
human existence through Antigone. Anti-
gone, the martyr, sacrifices her life for a
cause in which she believes, and Creon learns
wealth and power are meaningless if loved
ones must be sacrificed. It is a timeless piece
of theatre, with a moral as applicable to
contemporary audiences as it was to

Antigone asks some demanding questions
about integrity, conscience and strength. It is
intense from the outset, and must mentally
drain the talented cast. The entire company
is purposeful and sincere in the protrayal of
the various characters, not an easy task by
any standards. The intricacies of the mental
struggles of both Antigone and Creon could
be explored. more fully, but both Gwynyth
Walsh and Kevin McNulty handle their roles
quite credibly.
The emphasis of the Young Company at
Stratford's Third Stage is not on exterior
production values.

young men, struggling to put out an
intellectual activist magazine, and a beautiful

Grand Bend audiences may remember the

1985 cast need not fear being left in her
shadow. •

however, in her race, behind representatives

laments "How do you think it felt swimming

blasphemous to her, questioning all that is
good and true. To create a love "quadrangle"
concerning Sophie, the two roommates, and
her marine, is highly unlikely and equally as
hilarious.

Randy Hughson is Norman Cornell,
Andy's partner and one-man writing team,
churning out articles under at least a dozen
pseudonyms, for the magazine. When he
becomes infatuated with the new girl next
door, his writing suffers, causing Andy to
resort to drastic measures to meet the
publication deadline. Mr. Hughson's charis-
matic and energetic performance promises to
be a consistent crowd pleaser--from his
watching of Sophie getting, on the bus
through a telescope to a karate match with
Andy over (who else?) Sophie.
Running until August 17, Star Spangled.
Girl offers witty dialogue and a young,
personable cast to Playhouse audiences.
