Familiar theme of new Blyth play gives it appeal
ENTERTAINMENT
BY JULIE M acDONALA
Moose County, an original Canadian play
uy Colleen Curran, workshopped in Blyth in
January 1985 and currently playing in
repertory at the Blyth Festival, addresses the
hazards of chemical usage on the farm
through the familiar theme of the little man
(or woman, in this case) versus the huge
conglomerate. Though the mood is light-
hearted, the underlying message is a serious
one..
Theresa Pond --teacher, farm wife, and,
mother --crusades to , alert farmers to the
carsinogenic effects of the weed -killing
chemical sprays they use, Aided by her best
friend, Norah Fiedler, a small town girl
turned big city advertising executive,

The evening outdoor Service at Bethel
Bible Church, Egmondtiille was well at-
tended. The weather was cool but the wind
had gone down.
The old favorite hymns were accompanied
by Mrs. James Robertson of Lucan on the
keyboard and Mrs. Mervyn Lobb on the
organ.

couple on opposite sides of an issue. Nancy

ever happened" to her, though she does not
know which side of the chemical controversy
she supports.
Marianne Mcisaac, as Norah Fiedler, turns
in a colorful and energetic performance --
outwardly flamboyant, but m d the
dis-
turbed by her failing marriage
compromising but fabricated stories about
her which are circulating throughout her
hometown. Robert King, a familiar face to
Blyth Festival audiences, is Francis
"Anchor" Booth, a placid veterinarian who
provides an excellent complement to the
flashy Norah.
Eleanor Yeoman captures the essence of
Fern Hutton, the town busy -body and Moose
Week organizer, with style. Though on the
surface she 'is the lady that everyone
despises, she does have a heart, wanting,
through the establishment of Moose W eek, to
"bring some recognition to the town, make it
a place my children and grandchildren can
earn a good living in."
Moose . County ends with compromises
from all parties, but makes some solid
suggestions for solving the -chemical con-
tamination problem facing today's fanning
community. Blyth runs in repertory in until August
