at Clinton on Saturday, bowling for trophies
presented by the Vodden family in memory of
the late Harold Vodden. Art and Mary
Finlayson were second with 3 wins and 45
overplus 3 while the tournament was won by
Jack and Mary Fisher of Lucknow.
High two game winners were Fred and
Betty Tilley with two wins and 43 overplus of
5. The consolation prize went to Clare Reith
and Jean Lunn.
In a ladies pairs tournament at Iarcktow on
Wednesday the rink of Jean Lunn (lead) and
Mary Finlayson (skip) placed first with three
wins and 51. Bowling in second stage
playdowns of Seniors' Provincials, the rink of
Katie Phillips (lead), Olive Papple (vice) and
Mary Finlayson (skip) were defeated by the
Goderich entry of Grace Scrimegeour (skip),

In the final game Goderich was defeated by
last year's winner from Atwood who will now
advance to the finals.
. Next Wednesday will be the big anniver-
sary tournament and it is hoped to make it the
best one yet. All members of the committees
and the' draw master for the tournaments
have been busy arranging all the details and
the greens look to be in excellent condition.

HF Alice delights
hometown crowd
BY TOBY RAINEY
August II will long be remembered as
"H.F. Alice Day" in Clinton, the day the
hometown filly showed her style to more
than 1,500 cheering fans, charging across
the wire six lengths in front of the pack and
going away like a train, to win the third
Division of the Ontario Sires Stakes for
3 -year-old pacing fillies.
Even so, her winning time of 2;02 was
slow for this splendid Tarpon Count -Karina
Hanover filly, who holds the Canadian
record of I X57 and two-fifths as the fastest
female pacer of any age on a half -mile track,
set at Flamboro Downs last month.
The hometown fans loved it, as more than
50 of them poured onto the track to join Alice
in the winner's circle, and to congratulate
owner Bill Fleming, trainer Butch Elliot and
driver Ray McLean as Clinton Raceway Day
Chairman Frank Cook made the presentation
to wild applause from the packed grand-
stand.
This filly has been somewhat of a
pacesetter in the elite world of OSS fillies
since she set the Canadian record, coming
back a week later to win her OSS event at
Greenwood in 1:59; and then pacing to a
scorching t 157 and three-fifths win in a
tough elimination mile at the Rothman's
Summer Championships in Toronto July 27.
Her share of last Sunday's purse of $10,648
puts her winnings for 1985 at just under
$64,000, an enviable bankroll for a Clinton -
bred filly
The big win with H.F Alice in the 10th
race made it a hat trick plus one for driver
Ray McLean. who had already turned in one
win with Nugget Homer in the 4th race; with
another Clinton horse. Calgary Counsel
(owned by Bob and Paul Taylor of Clinton,
and trained by Paul Taylor) in the 6th; and
with Fireside Spree in the 9th, the second
OSS division of the day, and Spree's first
OSS win.
Fireside Spree is by the stallion Armbro
