Local motocross racer
motivated by family
A Seaforth man who considers himself one
of Ontario's top five motocross racers says his
hobby may have affected his mother's hair.
"At first she was hesitant (about his
involvement)," says 19 -year-old Brian
Keyes. But now she's one of his biggest fans.
"She didn't get those gray hairs for
nothing."
Brian's been at it for four years, and says a
friend from Hamilton first got him interested.
He's won a few races recently, and has
begun bringing in a little money, which he
uses for parts and rep.iirs for his bike. He
rides a Suzuki RM250.
Although it's mainly a hobby, he spends as
much time practising as he -can. Most of his
time on the weekends is taken up with it, he
saH does most of his racing at Hully Gully,
both through its house league and asa
member of the Canadian Motocross Associa-
tion.
Also helpful in the financial department is
his home track, Hully Gully.
"They give me contingency money," he
says. That usually means credit so he can buy
equipment he needs, which is a courtesy
extended to many riders by their home
tracks:
The trick to staying out of trouble, he says,
is to "keep your mind going about racing.
"You've also got to keep fit," Brian says.
In addition to the support of his mother, he
enjoys help and encouragement from his
father, who helps him with repairs and other
work to his bike, his sister Heather, 16, his
girlfriend, and his relatives, the Walkers,
from London.
' `T :cy rarely miss any races," he says,
which often means following him on the road
to such places as London.
When you get off the bike after a race, says
Brian, "you feel like dying. You're all muddy
and dusty:"
To relieve his exhaustion, he relies on
those standbys of teenagers everywhere:
"Kool-Aid and snacks."
When it comes to injuries, he's been pretty
lucky. He's had a few minor scrapes and
bumps, but no broken bones.
"You have to watch what you're doing,"
he says, "or you're going to goof up and
crash."
The bike he now owns is his fifth, and he
says "you need a new one pretty much every
year to race." The cost can climb though - his
is worth about $2,500 - so the prize money he
brings in is a big help.
The days he races are crammed full of
activity. He often begins before 7 a,m., and it
frequently doesn't end until after 6 in the
evening.
"There are a couple of races spread out
through the day," Brian says, and in
between, "You do as much work on your bike
as you can."
He has attended the Junior Canadian
Finals in Moncton. N.B. and Lethbridge,
rr

bike, you feel

Alberta, and says he is "doing good" this
year,
It's normal for him to finish third, he says.
Sometimes he even brings in a second place
finish, and on occasion the big prize.
"I'm usually up there," he says.
