Demolition of church
brings back memories
BY ROD HILTS
The demolition of the historic Cromarty
Presbyterian Church shed this week probably
stirred up a lot of memories for some of the
senior members of this tiny community.
Frank Elliott of Staffa is looking after the
demolition and will be using the wood from
the building to construct his own shed.
According to Tom Scott, a senior member
of the church and life-long resident of the
community, the church shed was built in the
fall of 1872 by John Cottle of Thames Road.
Mr. Scott, 87, said the building accommo-
dated 75 horses with 36 double stalls and
three single stalls.
New foundation poured
In 1938, a new foundation was poured for
the shed and it was shortened to 70 ft. in
length. The horse stalls were taken out and
the shed was used for horses by farmers
taking grain to be ground at the Cromarty
Chopping Mill.
"When it• was rebuilt, donations came in
from non -church members because they used
the shed to park and go to the feed mill," Mr. •
Scott explained.
Mr. Scott said the building Was last•used in
the 1950's when horses were parked there.
He said that since the 50's, the shed has been
used to store farm implements.
Mr, Scott said the area where the shed once
stood will likely be used for church parking.
Mr. Scott reflected on the past uses of the
shed by saying that it once used to store
equipment for the annual Mountain Grove
picnic.
"Benches, swings and ropes were stored
there. But there's been no picnic since 1934,"
Mr. Scott said.
Another memorable connection with the
shed was when the Boat Swing used to be
stored there.
"It was a crazy time for the older bunch and
it was used on a slope during Canada Day in
Hibbert. in 1867. It was a unique boat and it
used to be stored at the shed. It's been
missing since then," Mr. Scott said.
When asked if the presence of the historic
shed will be missed by some of the senior
members of the Cromarty community, Mr.
Scott said, "It will be missed to a certain
extent, but why keep something you have no
use for."

fall is in the air" is certainly a saying to which
we can relate at this time of year. The wheat
and grain fields are harvested and some
farmers are busy plowing in preparation for
the winter months.
The Brodhagen ball teams are now getting
ready for playoffs and playoff tournaments.
The Pee Wee girls will play at 10:30 a.m. in
St. Marys on Saturday, August 17 in a double
elimination playoff tournament. Parents and
fans are encouraged to attend and cheer on
the girls.
Tuesday night the Brodhagen Bantam girls

Brodhagen in second place in the South Perth
Division. The girls also won 6-5 against
W el1'esley in the first game of the best 2 of 3
series playoffs in the Western Division.
Brodhagen Squirt boys won against
Stratford but lost to Dublin and St. Marys in
the tournament at Mitchell on Saturday.
The Pee Wee boys are to be congratulated
on their showing in the Mitchell tournament
over the weekend. They were the top of their
league but didn't win the finals.
