Mr. Ellio t Intends to re -use the barn boards for his own shed. The shed, built In 1872, was used for horses In the 1950's and recently used tto store farm implements. Demolition of church brings back memories BY ROD HILTS The demolition of the historic Cromarty Presbyterian Church shed this week probably stirred up a lot of memories for some of the senior members of this tiny community. Frank Elliott of Staffa is looking after the demolition and will be using the wood from the building to construct his own shed. According to Tom Scott, a senior member of the church and life-long resident of the community, the church shed was built in the fall of 1872 by John Cottle of Thames Road. Mr. Scott, 87, said the building accommo- dated 75 horses with 36 double stalls and three single stalls. New foundation poured In 1938, a new foundation was poured for the shed and it was shortened to 70 ft. in length. The horse stalls were taken out and the shed was used for horses by farmers taking grain to be ground at the Cromarty Chopping Mill. "When it• was rebuilt, donations came in from non -church members because they used the shed to park and go to the feed mill," Mr. • Scott explained. Mr. Scott said the building Was last•used in the 1950's when horses were parked there. He said that since the 50's, the shed has been used to store farm implements. Mr, Scott said the area where the shed once stood will likely be used for church parking. Mr. Scott reflected on the past uses of the shed by saying that it once used to store equipment for the annual Mountain Grove picnic. "Benches, swings and ropes were stored there. But there's been no picnic since 1934," Mr. Scott said. Another memorable connection with the shed was when the Boat Swing used to be stored there. "It was a crazy time for the older bunch and it was used on a slope during Canada Day in Hibbert. in 1867. It was a unique boat and it used to be stored at the shed. It's been missing since then," Mr. Scott said. When asked if the presence of the historic shed will be missed by some of the senior members of the Cromarty community, Mr. Scott said, "It will be missed to a certain extent, but why keep something you have no use for." -1CffR ,z all star tours "SERVING YOU SINCE '62" -Get Away Tours - CANADIAN DESTINATIONS 6 Days Quebec and the Capitals Aug. 25, Sept. 9, 16, 23 13 Days Best of the Maritimes Aug, 25, Sept. 8, 29 U.S. DESTINATIONS 5 Days Pennsylvania Dutch Treat Aug. 19, Sept. 19, Oct, 15 7 Days Williamsburg & Washington Aug. 24, Sept. 21, Oct, 19 9 Days Myrtle Beach & Brookgreen Gardens Oct 19 14 Days Florida Fling Oct. 26, Nov. 9 23 Days California & Historic West Sept. 28, Oct. 19 2 Days 2 Days 2 Days 3 Days 3 Days 3 Days 3 Days 3 Days 4 Days 4 Days 4 Days 4 Days 5 Days -Short Fun Tours - Rochester Sept. 14 It's a Mystery Sept. 14, Sept. 28 Frankenmuth Oct. 19, Nov. 2, 16 Erie-sistable Oct. 18, Nov. 8, Nov. 22, Dec. 6 Buffalo Shopping Nov. 1, 15, 29, Dec. 6 Gatineau Hills Sept. 24, •Oct. 2 Haliburton Highlands Sept. 16, 23, Oct. 1 Explore 1000 Islands Sept. 9 Magic of Michigan Oct. 15 Muskoka Splendour Sept. 21, 24, 27, 30, Oct. 6 Agawa Canyon Discovery Sept. 17, 21, 25, 29, Oct. 3, 7 Scott's Vacation Retreat Sept. 13, 20, 27 Scott's Vacation Retreat Sept. 16, 23, 30 ---LABOUR DAY WEEK -END - AUGUST 30 -SEPTEMBER 2 Nashville Express The Big Apple, N.Y.
