A16 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR AUGUST 7, 1985
Relief on
way for
stricken
farmers
Relief is on the way for drought -stricken.
western farmers.
Following a tour of affected farms in
Saskatchewan and Alberta, federal Agricul-
turelVrmrsTernohn Wise and Ins counterparts
from those two provinces decided to establish
programs through which they could improve
problems caused to crops and livestock by
both grasshoppers and drought.
An emergency task group will be establish-
ed to work with the appropriate government
agencies and to seek advice and input from
those affected by the drought.
The task group will be made up of
Members of Parliament, Members of the two
provincial Legislative Assemblies and senior
government officials. This group will report
back to the Ministers as soon as possible with
option for consideration by the federal and
provincial Cabinets.
Although the crop and livestock sectors are
both affected seriously, the problems of
livestock producers will be the task group's
immediate priority.
Mr. Wise expressed shock at the seVerity
of the conditions he saw in both Saskatch-
ewan and Alberta. "I am deeply concerned,"
he said, "I have never seen anything this
serious or so wide -spread in Canada."
Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lorne
Hepworth said, "We viewed the area and
now is the time to act."
Junior Farmers to compete
On August 10, 1985, Junior Farmers from
all across Ontario will get the chance to put
their safety know-how and skill to work in the
Junior Farmers' Farm Equipment Safety
Competition.
The competitions will be held in conjunc-
tion with the Junior Farmers' Summer
Games at the University of Guelph beginning
at 9:30 a.m. at Parking Lot P-14, near the
Physical Education Building.
The competitions will be made up of seven
teams of five members, each team represent-
ing a geographical zone in the Province. The

competition consists of five individual com-
ponents: knowledge and hazard identifica-
tion exercise; and forestry exercise. All
competitors will be judged on skill and
knowledge, as well as being timed.
The competitions are designed to increase
skill and safety in the operation of farm
equipment. The competitions are jointly
sponsored by the Junior Farmers' Associa-
tion of Ontario, John Deere Limited, Forest
Products Accident Prevention Association,
and the Farm Safety Association.

US says no to removing duties
The American government has taken a
swipe at Canadian hog producers - again.
The United States International Trade
Commission ruled recently Canadian hog
exports constitute "injury" to American
markets. It decided against removing a 4.4
cent -per -pound (Canadian) countervailing
duty on hogs entering that country from
Canada.
