In the matter of the Ontario Heritage Act
R.S.O. 1980 Chapter 337
NOTICE OF INTENTION
TO DESIGNATE
TO:
Citizens of Seaforth
Dedi-care Centres Ontario Ltd.
Ontario Heritage Foundation
Take notice that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Seaforth, on the
9th day of July 1985 decided to designate the lands and buildings known
municipally as "The Former Seaforth Public School." Church Street, as a
property of architectural and historical value or interest under The Heritage Act.
R.S.O. 1980, Chapter 337.
Short Statement of the Reasons for the Proposed Designation
Significant historical and architectural features are as follows:
Built in 1867, the Seaforth Public School at the corner of Church and James
Streets was the first brick public building to be erected by the Municipality and
served the community until 1953.
This two storey symmetrical T -plan building has coursed field stone
foundations, Flemish bond buff brick walls and a medium -pitched gable roof
with narrow cornice and plain fascia.
The nine -bay front elevation is articulated by an advanced gabled frontispiece
on which is superimposed a three-storey projecting bay that establishes a strong
centre axis through its double doors with high transom, "Palladian" window,
louvered attic opening and pedimented roof. Ground floor fenestration was
originally six -over -six sash with radiating flat arch voussoirs and wood sills with
brick lugs. in the three bays of the rear addition the lower window heads are
segmentally arched. All other fenestration is round headed, with red brick
voussoirs and modified Gibbsian surrounds in raised brick on the prominent
elevations.
With the exception of the central bay, all corners of the original block have
raised quoins. A projecting belt course circles the block.
This manipulation and exaggeration of Georgian compositional devices
reflects a more inventive concern with effects of plasticity and volume typical of
the Italianate influence on Canadian architecture. The roundheaded windows,
turret -like centre bay, elongated proportions, bold juxtaposition of masses and
enlivening of surface textures typify the, application of Italianate aesthetics to an
essentially conservative Georgian form.
Notice of objection to the designation may be served on the Clerk within 30
days of July 29th, 1985.
Dated at Seaforth, this 29th day of July, 1985.
James Crocker
Clerk
