happened. There have been some reports
that the teenagers' car was travelling more
than 160 kilometres an hour when the OPP
decided to try and stop it.
Some reports indicate the cruiser burst
into • flames when the other car hit it
broadside, while others suggest it may have
been forced into a ditch first.
One thing that is fairly certain is that
police pursued the car at very high speeds.
This has caused concern in some circles.
including the office of Ontario Solicitor -
General Ken Keyes.
Mr. Keyes said yesterday he is increasing-
ly worried about the fatality rate arising from
the use by police of high-speed chases.
However, Ontario's chiefs of police have
been reluctant to .abandon the chases as a
method of capturing suspects unless the
government is prepared to offer an
alternative.
Mr. Keyes' ministry has been preparing a
report on high speed chases. 'That report is
expected soon.
OW detachments from Walkerton and
Kincardine were called in on the initial
chase, The investigation is continuing.

military muscle off the coast of any other
nation that doesn't support it, while Britain
maintains an expensive presence on the tiny,
basically useless islands of the Falklands,
there is not even so much of a hint to the
South African government that we might be
willing to back our words with actions.
And if we can't even show enough resolve
to accept the short term pain of trade
sanctions in trade for the long term gain of a
democratic South Africa who can blame if
blacks in the country felt, to borrow an old
phrase from the westerns Ronald Reagan
'eves so much "White man speak with
forked tongue" and run into the arms of the
communists who,will support them.

yard. The exploding gas had blasted him
right through the kitchen door and out of the
house. Once he decided to stop his suicidal
attempts, he very nearly succeeded by
accident.
The interesting part of these stories is
they happened in real life. We can share in
the pain, the mistakes and the humor of the
situations which people get themselves into.
Remember the one -legged man who
robbed a bank last year? He amazed
witnesses by escaping on foot. Of course
police had no trouble following his trail. A
man who carries a bag while hopping down
the street on one leg is hard to forget.
A couple of years ago an American
attempted to sue the city in which he lived
for pain and suffering. His lawsuit was on
behalf of all the poor mosquitoes who were
killed by the city's spraying program. Of
course his action was thrown out of court.
People are crazy, but they are also
entertaining. The stories which occasionally
appear in the daily newspaper add a little hit
of comic relief to the main diet of disasters I
look for them because I can relate to the
people they describe. We all make mistakes,
perhaps not so big, but big enough that we
can feel empathy for these people
The audacity they sometimes display
makes me feel envious. !don't think 1 could
ever equal the antics of those Russian
soldiers, but I do remember times in the
service when f would have enjoyed the
thought of trading an airplane for a case of
vodka, Heck, there is even a certain sergeant
f would have gladly thrown in on the deal
