The Huron Expositor, 1985-08-07, Page 6A6 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR. AUGUST 7, 1985 BRUSSELS ..-._.._ Brussels fortunateto e free disaster' from The error, or folly, of a moment can become the sorrow of a lifetime. Nature can be cruel with overpowering ravishment. Last Thursday night, in Chey- enne, Wyoming, a violent thunderstorm wrought havoc when 15 centimeters of rain poured down in 31/4 hours. At least 12 people lost their liges. Parts of the city got 10 centimeters of hail, forcing people to flee to emergency shelters. Street crews used front-end loaders to clear the blocked streets. Cars and trucks floated down flooded streets. Telephone booths were wrenched from their bases, and power and telephone lines were down. Basements all over the city were flooded. It was reported that"there were thousands and thousands, if not millions, of dollars in property damage." How fortunate that, as yet, this area has escaped any serious disaster. Michael Warren announced his resigna- tion as Canada Pot president on Thursday of last week. Some reports say he was asked (paid) to leave, others that he was fed up with what he considered government interference in the, Crown Corporation. Revenue Minister Perrin Beatty was quick to insist the reports of interference • were "entirely .false." Mr. Warren not only announced his resignation on Thursday, he also got married that day at a downtown Ottawa courthouse. Itis said he wanted out and that many people on the government side. wanted him out. Hecan now enjoy a honeymoon with his bride without worrying about the woes of Canada Post. A number of odd wedding ceremonies have been reported. This one, mentioned in a recent newspaper item, is the most off -beat of them all: "The blushing bride wore a veil, high heels and nothing else. (No wonder she blushed.( The handsome groom wore shiny shoes and his birthday suit, The bride's 'mother wore goosebumps all over. Only the grooms parents wore clothes --- and pained expressions. They studied the ceiling through the nude nuptials." Who would perform a wedding in such crude circumstances? Was the item just a tongue-in-cheek joke pawned off on gullible readers? In our later years, as we think back, are SHORT SHOTS by Evelyn Kennedy there things we regret? Things we have or have not done, for which we feel remorse? Could we have been kinder? more thoughtful and considerate of others? Have some of our actions brought trouble or sadness to others? Were we always too busy and put off, until it was too late, things we should have done? It is felt many of us do have regrets and remorse. W e could have been a better person. He said, "How beautiful they are." "But, what if they are plain." "Then" he replied, "about other womens' plainness." With student jobs hard to come by a 15 -'ear -old student in Victoria annlied for a job. The ad sounded rather fishy but she needed a job. After 20 applicants were interviewed she was accepted. She donned a mermaid's outfit and went to work catching customers for seafood dinners at the Villages Restaurant. At first she was hesitant. Now she is enjoying it. She had a marriage proposal the first day. Occasionally someone will lean out of a car window and shout "Do you want to go fishing?" The restaurant owner says it has been a good promotion: "I have. sold more food in the last week than I've ever sold in this restaurant." The young lady must be as attractive as the mermaid who was said to sit on a rock and sine to lure sailors to destruction. CANDY I IS DANDY — Saturday's picnic at Seaforth Lions Park, in celebration of Topnotch's 40th anniversary, featured something for everyone. To keep the youngsters amused (such as Kyle Henderson, left, and his two friends), organizers held a candy scramble.
